Matteo Veneziani
Good day to all; I'm very happy to announce my next project; after 5 years Orbx has returned on Australian airports, and now is the time for Gold Coast Airport! Designed in parallel with the recently-released CityScene Gold Coast, YBCG is a highly detailed and incredibly complete reproduction of the airport and surroundings area, completing the most accurate and detailed airport-city combo currently in our catalogue. Gold Coast International Airport has been designed carefully and reflects the real-world layout of the airport; keen observers will even notice the new apron expansion and Taxiway Charlie (opened in late March 2018 – it’s not even in the charts yet!). The scenery has been optimized using our latest techniques, and has been designed to work optimally with either Orbx CityScene Gold Coast and/or Orbx Australia. As an added bonus feature, Gold Coast Intl also includes a highly detailed depiction of nearby YSPT Southport Airport, with its unique and characteristic sloped taxiways and elevated parking spots. Gold Coast: a little bit of info Gold Coast is a beachside city in the Australian state of Queensland, approximately 66km south of the state capital Brisbane. Today, the Gold Coast is a major tourist destination with its sunny subtropical climate and has become widely know for its surfing beaches, high-rise dominated skyline, theme parks, nightlife and rainforest hinterland. As many of you may have seen recently, the city hosted the 21st Commonwealth Games which ran from 4 to 15 April 2018. YBCG Gold Coast International Airport The Gold Coast International Airport (formerly known as Coolangatta Airport) is an international Australian airport located at the southern end of the Gold Coast. The entrance to the airport is situated in the suburb of Bilinga near Coolangatta. A great piece of trivia; runway itself straddles the state border of Queensland and New South Wales, and during the summer months these states are in two different time zones! The airport exceeded 6 million passengers and is the sixth-busiest airport in Australia. The airport is frequently visited by Boeing 787, 737, Airbus A330, 320/21 and Embraer jets. The airport also has a busy general aviation apron, as can be seen from the screenshots below the airport is as home to light single VFR weekend warriors as it is to heavy-metal captains. Gold Coast Airport has two airline lounges: one operated by Virgin Australia, and the other by Qantas; both have been in operation since 2012. The airlines which operate at the airport are many, for example you are likely to see AirAsia X, Virgin Australia, Air New Zealand, JETGO, Jetstar, Qantas, TigerAir and many more charter operations, particularly during the peak tourist season. The new apron at the southern end of the airfield was been opened just a few days before the Commonwealth Games and now is fully operative, the same for the new taxiway Charlie. Despite an acute lack of source material and references, this scenery has included both components with the help of local staff and pilots. YBCG is perfectly situated near two well-loved ORBX destinations. The nearest airfield is YSPT Southport, which is located only 30km to the north, just beyond the Gold Coast skyline. Brisbane Intl (YBBN) is just a little further north, and perfectly situated for both short joyrides and testing flights for your favourite airliner. Beyond these fields, Gold Coast is a short flight away from Coffs Harbour (250km), Port Macqaurie (370km), Cairns (1400km) and Melbourne (1400km) airports. YSPT Southport Airport: Gold Coast International Airport also includes a high quality version of YSPT Southport Airport. This small airport is located (as mentioned above) about 30km north of Gold Coast Airport. This airfield has a single tight runway and unique sloped elevated taxiway and parking lots; these features have been carefully recreated. This small airport is very active, many GA aircraft based on-site. Near the main apron is famous club house of Southport Flying Club. Despite the unique elevation features, Southport is fully compatible with AI traffic. Orbx Gold Coast International Airport features: Highly detailed, accurate representation of Gold Coast International Airport with new apron and taxiway charlie. Beautiful ground textures in 15cm/px, with bonus 7cm ultra-HD at Southport airport. Bonus Southport Airport YSPT, with unique sloped taxiway and elevated parking lots Super level of realism in both airports and surroundings used in combination of Orbx Cityscene Gold Coast. Compatible with Orbx Australia and/or Orbx Cityscene Gold Coast. Includes Dynamic lights and extremely realistic specular effects over ground textures. Fully optimized by using latest techniques. For Microsoft Flight Simulator X and Lockheed Martin Prepar3D v1-4 Enjoy! YBCG Gold Coast International airport YSPT Southport airport Keep an eye out for more previews coming soon! caleb1
Looking great! Two questions:1. Would you guys have considered doing this airport if it was not for this "request"?https://orbxsystems.com/forum/topic/139878-coolangatta-airport-ybcg/2. Will we be able to use this with FTX Global or do we need AU?Thanks.

Musketeer
Wow, looks amazing. Together with CityScene Gold Coast and ORBX AU this will create a real showcase area to fly in. I can almost see all the posts in the screenshot forum already
Darren Howie
Great work from the Orbx team. Having flown into Cooly about 600 times it feels like and dealt with Thunderstorms, crap visibility, poor navaid support at one of Australias busiest and most challenging airports in bad weather it will be great to see it in the sim so everyone can experience it! Now how about here...Hamo Or here...Sunny Coast

macca22au
Brilliant work, Matteo, I am really looking forward to its release. As a once RW pilot who flew into YBCG back in the VOR/DME approach days, I support Darren absolutely. It is no help to him or me to know that an ILS is being installed, but in an area of prevailing northerlies it will frequently be downwind with all the fun attached, but there is now a couple of RNAV approaches that in the opinion of Qantas Boeing 737 skippers are better am more useful than the ILS. jakearob97
Looks bloody amazing, cannot wait to fly the bus into Cooly, holding my breath for a Perth scenery and cityscene just like this to open up the poor, sometimes forgotten Western side of Australia Great job ORBX team! I will also be buying this airport, that is if I can use it with FTX Global, if it needs FTX AU I'm afraid it will need to wait.

TerryM
Caleb, I can't see how Australia could ever be TrueEarth..... (a) Its way too big, and (b) I doubt there are high quality imagery available Australia v2 will probably just be an updated fat region, but that would be welcomed by me and many others

JV has said they will have only 2 seasons for the bigger areas "to keep things sane." That will half the download sizes. But it will still be huge. Maybe it will be 2m resolution instead of 1m for the big areas as well. Orbx should offer a $200 USD or so rebate for their customers to buy bigger drives! TonyD
Australia may be large but a lot of it is simply refrerred to as GABA. "Great Australian Bugger All" Fly over Australia in daylight and you will spend hours looking at exactly the same type of scenery. So size might not be a problem. Musketeer
Could be wrong, but I don't think Australia v2 will be TE. I suspect TE will only be used for smaller areas. I'm fine with that, although I wouldn't mind a TE for parts of Australia like around Sydney/Melbourne/Brisbane. Or a CityScene Sydney/Melbourne/Brisbane
