At an elevation of 1,707 metres (5,600 ft), it is one of the highest airports in Europe. Due to its location in the middle of the valley surrounded by high mountains, no ILS approach exists. Samedan can only be approached visually and IFR traffic has to close its flightplan and land as VFR traffic.
