Today marks the 90th anniversary of the first flight of the Australian Inland Mission Aerial Medical Service from Cloncurry to Julia Creek in Queensland.

The AMS was finally formed by the Rev John Flynn on May 15th 1928.

The first flight using a DH.50 took place 2 days later taking off from Cloncurry.

The AMS was renamed in 1942 to become the Flying Doctor Service and the "Royal" was added in 1955.

The RFDS never actually operated the Islander.

The RFDS is mostly funded by public donation.

Today it has bases throughout Australia and operates over 60 aircraft.

The flight here was from Cloncurry to Julia Creek.

Now this is an all-positive jubilee. Not with a totally authentic plane, but a good reason to raise a glass!

The irony was not lost on me Gerold with these two very different milestones.

Thank you Landon.

You make as many toasts as you desire, I am sure the Flying Doctor can help you if you have too many!:o

Great shots and story.  What a great service these people are doing,

Thanks John and these people deserve the greatest accolades for the job they do along with all of the other emergency services around the world.

A wide open runway everywhere landscape! Slightly overshot that base to final turn there mate ;)

Thanks Erik, it is a huge flat country but I had to do a very tight turn to line back up with the runway which ended up being very dangerous.

When we landed the nurse was chasing me for making all her bottles of medicine fly around the cabin:o:ph34r:.

Thank you Paul, where would we be without these wonderful people.:P

I totally agree Martyn :)

Yesterday I was in hospital in Cardiff and we could hear the Air Ambulance Service (helicopter) landing.

These services are fantastic!

Well I didn't really know all of that KDK, thanks for mentioning it.

Where would we be with out them. I know the service down here in Lonny

operates several times a day ,as I quite often hear them fly out to not only around Tas

but to the mainland as well. All volunteers and worth every cent they get.:)

cheers

Now that would be a nice back up plan for sure! Hopefully, no such extraction plan ever needs to be activated though ;)
