YBAS?

Very probably - he's been there and shown pics from there before;)

Nothing like the red dust of the Aussie outback - is there?

hmmmm....looks like AUS or Africa

That is correct: An area with lots of iron in the sand to turn it red...

I'm guessing it's more or less in the centre of a continent :)

Good idea. And it is neither Antarctica nor Asia!

The landscape may fit, but: No!

Scary that you remember my travels, "AI" John! And you located the dust correctly...

YAYE - I think the windsock is the one at the end of runway 31?

Perfect Paul, just perfect. Even the windsock is correct!

You can see Kata Tjuta in the background, btw.

Who wants to post another shot?

Not really mate - you always seem to be down under a lot - and we couldnt miss the big red

Paul seemed to think it OK if I put up another teaser that may not be an Orbx

The aircraft is I think a 707 and the pic about '75

I think the airport is in the Middle East, if it's the same airport, I had to go work there for a few weeks about 15 years ago, although, it looked a lot newer and bigger than it does in your photo John 😀.

If I am correct, one very special aircraft used to fly there in the 1970s.

P.S. Are you in a Cathy Pacific 707?

I thought it was VR-??? Hence my Cathay Pacific guess.

The airport I’m thinking of used to have a BA Concorde service to London in the mid 1970s.

Addis Abeba airport in Ethiopia?

I googled a bit and Prune says the only African destinations of QF in the 1970s have been Johannesburg, Mauritius, Harare and Cairo. Out of these it only could be Cairo.

But QF also flew to many destinations in the Middle East and Asia which would fit to the pic.

However by 1975 QF had switched most of their long haul flights to B747s.

A total guess as Paul said Middle East and Googling, Bahrain?

That’s the airport I was thinking of also - Bahrain.

Think it used to be a stopping pointing / fueling point between London and Singapore then on to Australia.

BA did a Concorde service there in the early years, until the Americans let them in.

2 more clues - was the subject of brilliant  aviation story by Neville Shute - a story I absolutely recommend

and where this airfield had only one hangar !!!!!

The 2 nd - amongst all the guesses - is that it was the first/last stopover on the Kangaroo route

PS -its not always easy to find an Orbx airport I have been to - for me to take part - so this will be

the last one from me

Yep - you and Graham got it early

The book - I mentioned was "Round the Bend" by Neville Shute - the writer of many flying stories

and Australian Outback

Bahrain was the normal refueling stop - sometimes Tehran - and was great for Duty free

Dubai - at the time was a goat paddock - until they built a duty free one - and look what is there now

No point in my doing anymore - under the rules - "because they would be too easy

That is the trouble, John: We have probably visted them all in the last years and need to repeat ourselves.

But we should try to, from time to time!

If Bahrein was correct, then Graeme @boetie wins the coconut!

I would have another Orbx place, in case Graeme does not find one...

I have one on a printed photo that I'll need to find in an old photo album. It'll take a few days to locate :)

Not to me...direct after my post with Teheran as guess, you posted: Yep - you and Graham got it early

...and I didn't know that Boetie was the alias-name of Graham, sorry...

subject on our forum - of date - that is worth reading :)

Would you add a new old picture John? Or should I do?

Yeah, the colourful buildings look somewhere like Iceland or Denmark or even Canada. Definitely northern hemisphere :)
