Reaching for the stars

I wanted to do this for the longest time. Yesterday I finally did it. I take off from my old Luftwaffe base Fürstenfeldbruck (we used to call it Fürsti) with a clean F 104G, meaning no tanks or weapons.

After just 105 seconds, I have reached 37,000 ft

Another 135 seconds and I pass 64,000 ft

Passing 70,000 ft

At 79,000 ft the plane becomes very difficult to control

So I break up the exercise and return to base

Btw, in Dec. 1959, a USAF Captain set with an F 104C a new world altitude record of 103,289 ft

Great flight and altitude experiment, Bernd. Which causes many questions to me:

How could Captain "Joe" B. Jordan in reality pass 100 kft and still control the plane?!

He would be called an astronaut by definition, wouldn´t he?

And did you manage to land safely in the widowmaker?

What a great set Bernd and I like those gorgeous sky colours the higher you got.

Did you tap on the window of the ISS as you flew past?

Many thanks, Martyn. To go that high and experience somewhat the earth's curvature is truly amazing. Unfortunately I had no GPS installed, so I did not manage to find the ISS :)

Thanks a lot, Gerold. I don't have the foggiest, how he managed to do it, I certainly did not succeed in the sim. And yes, the widowmaker made it back safely to terra firma in one piece ^_^

Wonderful set of shots, Bernd. I assume the gentleman concerned here was one Captain Kirk <grin>

Many thanks Andy. I think Capt. Kirk would not have gone through all that trouble, he just would have just said: "Beam me up, Scottie" (although it is rumoured, that he never actually said that in any of the episodes :))

That was excellent Bernd and I never knew a real one went that high, just amazing for back then!

Thanks a lot, Jack. I was very lucky to still have experienced the F 104, she has a very special place in my heart ;)
