Mountain flying

Recommended Posts

I'm seeking suggestions for areas that have stunning montainous bush/GA flying. My go to is always PNG or NZ. Hoping someone knows of any other regions in the world I could explore?

Cheers

Graeme :)

Graeme, another great place for bush flights is in the USA Pacific Northwest. Washington, Idaho, and Oregon all have really interesting farm strips tucked away here and there, and the state and federal Forestry Services maintain strips way out there in the wilderness. You can Google lists of these strips (I have a whole folder full). Some of them will ask every skill you learned in PNG and NZ. Also, the FlightSim freeware site has a large library of bush strips from all over the world. It's a great source for making your own global bush bunch. Many of those free downloads are as good as any professional commercial product.

Happy flying, my friend!

Thank you Rodger. I used to enjoy that region in the old FTX days. It is a beautiful region. My flightsim.to downloads are getting a bit out of hand! I'll have to get more organized, just had a quick look, there's bountiful uploads! Should keep me entertained for a while.

Cheers

I agree with Rodge and Larry about the West Coast of the USA.  But Sony neglect more southern airports.  Try Blue Canyon-Nyack, at 5200 ft over Immigrant Gap, Dinner Pass.  L05, Kern Valley is in tight river valley between mountains north of the man made Lake Isabella.   Also KJAC, Jackson Hole, Wyoming by the Grand Tetons, and KTEX, Telluride, Colorado are great mountain flying experiences.  All are Orbx airports in P3D, I don't know about other Sims.

  • 2 weeks later...

Alaska, B.C., Western Washington, and Idaho all have good scenery and good bush flying.  (You already know about NZ and PNG.)

Lots of Orbx airports in these areas too.

KMYL McCall is a nice Orbx airport to use as a realistic base to explore all the famous backcountry strips in central Idaho.

Milo Taylor currently has two packs of Idaho bush strips available in Orbx Direct, IDA The Deadly 3 and IDA Not so deadly 3.

It sounds like he will be doing more!

Take the alps and fly from, say Salzburg to Grenoble with as many burger stops as you can digest.

There are even a lot of airfields where you can land small jets, at least F-18s...

As many others, I suggest flying in the PNW.

Here is the then famous video of Patrick Scharnovsky aka Jigsaw, which was officially used by Orbx to promote their first outside of Australia scenery, namely PNW. This video made me changing my mind and to finally switch as a diehard FS9 fanboy to FSX, only to be able to fly in this groundbreaking and innovative gorgeous PNW scenery. :)

... Zürich LSZH to LIMC Milano.  This is quite interesting because to cross the Alps at altitude you should fly at least at FL170

but here you can find a route which goes through the valleys at aprox. 8000 feet max. You can use a GA Twin or a heli.

Look at the maps and go to Buochs LSZC and than follow route 2 to Andermatt, Gotthard, Locarno LSZL than follow

Lago Maggiore to LIMC which is the bigger airport for Milano and a bit west. I fly it in Xplane but should work in msfs as well.

Try looking at the Return to Misty Moorings website.  Along with some great Orbx airports in Alaska  they have many bush strips, Forest Service locations and other goodies.  All freeware.

Try the west coast from Washington up to Alaska. Not a lot of airports in some areas but the scenery is great and navigation very interesting through the fjords.

Orbx is coming out with very nice bush strips for MSFS. It's worth checking them out. I've got all of them and am very pleased.

Thank you all for your suggestions, some great regions/routes. That's me sorted for the next twelve months! Can't wait to get exploring.

Cheers

Seem like a good post to drop a teaser. A scene from my next pack. They will be challenging and the heli pilots will love it. Also, You can do some great driving in the Juice goose if you so desire.
