boetie
My first flight into Anchorage - ATC must be on the ball during busy times. I had no idea there were so many strips the area!
kiwi stu
Nice Graeme Agree..I was real surprise at the airports and strips in that area..an educated guess would be originally built when Cold War was in full swing No doubt someone will know Stu
Mallard
A fine pic indeed! And, yes, there are a surprising amount of airports and -strips for such a small area... And just think that they cater to the big jets as well as the smalles amphibian props. Quite a muddle - but it seems to work Cheers Mallard
BradB
Fantastic shot Graeme , yes a very busy place indeed . Orbxtreme
Great shot, sure is a place where it's comfortable to have an engine failure, there's always a runway within gliding distance...and if not, a highway!

olderndirt
ATC must be on the ball during busy times. As a former radar approach guy at PANC, I can vouch for the air traffic complexity in the area. With an active fighter wing at Elmendorf combined with freighter/airline traffic at International, the excitement level in the IFR room is usually fairly high. Throw in the General aviation guys off Merrill and Lake Hood, - required to squawk and talk and the plot just thickens. I won't even mention the primary targets, known only to themselves who are often part of the mix.

ShawnG
there are more pilots per capita in Alaska than just about anywhere else, and Anchorage is the hub of all that, not to mention the military at Elmendorf, and PANC being a major world cargo hub. I often listen to PANC ATC online, never quiet for long.
