Well that didn't take long for trouble to find me

Trying to Copy my "community" folder to another remote HDD ready to install into my new rig. Message I get is "your organisation does not allow you to place this here". I've tried placing it elsewhere but get the same message. Could somebody please tell me how to get around this.

Thanks

Try renaming the Community folder to Community.x

Then make a new Community folder, so that MSFS sees one existing.

Now try moving the Community.x folder to the HDD you want,

When you get your new rig, you just need to move it back to your new MSFS installation on your new rig.

The new installation will have created a new Community (empty) folder.

Move your Community.x folder to MSFS and delete the newly made Community folder.

Now rename your Community.x folder to Community.

Just to add to Jon's excellent guide

If you ever have just a single  item in your community folder that you want to remove, but still keep

a copy , you can just zip it to another location of your choice and then delete it from the community

folder.

Cheers

Thanks guys, appreciate your help. As well as the new set up, I having to deal with and find my way around Win11 which is a right pain. Another question - is it possible to copy my Orbx "my account" so I don't have to reinstall those one at a time?

Once you get sorted I strongly recommend the following app from Flightsim.to   MSFS Addons Linker  makes organising and managing  all your addons from a different drive or storage point with ease. There is also a tutorial  Tutorial  but all you really have to do is tell the app where your addons are stored and where your Community Folder is and the app does the rest.  Big benefit is game starting time if you have lots of addons. i.e. I have every addon for Australia which if everything was active takes ages to load so before I do a flight I just check/tick the scenery that I want and then when finished or when starting a new flight somewhere else I just untick addon I do not want. I have even saved my scenery in separate country folders so I can locate scenery easily. Anyway just FYI. Cheers

Thanks mate,

Any and all info gratefully received. I'll take a look at Addon Linker once I get this piece of sh*t setup. Win 11 is just NOT working. I'm on my old computer as it just wont find this Forum. It goes direct to Central no matter what address I type in.

I assume you have full admin control of your pc Don?

Thanks Paul, the short answer is yes. My main issue is not with file names (as I understand it) It's something to do with "permissions". The message I get is "your organisation does not allow you to place this file here. I checked my settings and I have full permission rights to copy this file to another drive in this case my WD HDD, so I'm stumped right now. The thought of having to reinstall all that stuff I have bought, is giving me nightmares. Ben down that road when my son-in-law accidentally deleted my community last time I had a reinstall. I'm out of idea's and worst of all my techy is away oversea's so failing having to take it back to the mob I bought it from, I don't have any other options

Thanks Jon, as I explained to Paul, just to save me having to type it again, from what I can work out it's not the name, but the fact that of where or what I'm trying to do. where I want to transfer the file to. Windows doesn't even allow me to complete loading the file before I try to paste it, it stops 70% of the way through, I'm not very good with computers so I have no idea how to fix this, but thanks for trying to help.

Hi Don,

I bought a new pc a year ago (W11). Once I set up my Orbx account on it I downloaded my scenery a few at a time. I just clicked on a few 'circles' (next to the airport name) and walked away from the pc.  I was clicking on about five airports at a time. It worked, but I expect that was the long way of doing it. No doubt someone here has a faster solution.

W11 is not too bad on the basics. Initially I found it confusing. But underneath (folders/settings/searching etc) it seems to work the same as W10.

I wonder if the installation places a security file elsewhere?  Maybe in Windows? And that is stopping the transfer?

Just a guess on my part. Hopefully someone from Orbx can advise.

Don, I am following this thread in earnest, but since I have not moved to Windows 11 yet, there is not much assistance I can offer on this matter, short of some of the more obvious stuff that you have already been advised of. It does add another layer of complexity to get a new system with a brand new operating system as well. As the frustrating moments hit you, try and take some deep breaths, walk away if needed, get your favorite beverage and then try again when you are not frustrated. Even though I have no Win 11 experience, I have heard countless testimonials from simmers that like it once you get past the learning curve. Such is the cycle of learning how to adapt to a new Windows whenever one comes down the pipe :)

Stay positive,

Landon

Thanks Landon, it's really trying my patience right now. I think that last night I might have overcome the not finding the Forums problem, so I don't have to keep running back and forth between two computers. I'll know a bit later in the day, I have a follow up appointment with my specialist, which will take me away from all this for a bit, could be a good thing, as you said walk away, take a break. Thanks, talk later.

I had encountered this recently. A trick passed on by my mate Greg was to zip the entire Community folder, rename the original community folder for safe keeping, and upzip into a new folder location.

Thats worth a try, thanks Trev
