flsm (Frank)
It may have been the Americans who coined the term RADAR (Radio Detection and Ranging) in 1940 but it was the British who invented RADAR during 1935-39 just in time for the Battle of Britain in 1940. Without RADAR at this time, world history would have been a lot different. RADAR was largely developed at Bawdsey Manor in Suffolk, UK, shown between the RHS wing and tailplane of the aircraft in the pic. The aircraft is a WW2 British Avro Anson and it was an Avro Anson that conducted the first flight test of the new RADAR system in 1937 at Bawdsey. Just a little piece of history. Cheers. Rodger Pettichord
Hey Frank. Nice! Another interesting fact about WWII British radar -- the initial system was called Chain Home and provided the world's first integrated radar defense But it was no good below two-thousand feet, and German bombers used to come in below that almost at will. A bright lad adapted Royal Navy ship's radar to meet that need. Chain Home Low watched from ground level up to two, thousand feet, thus covering the gap. No more sneaking through. Meabeachboy
Thanks Rodger, clever chaps getting a full system in the end.

VH-KDK
A wonderful image of the trusty old Anson Frank. Excellent history from both you and Rodger, talk about discovering the right thing at the right time. Last night on Hot Seat, Eddie asked the question, what the last in RADAR stood for. What a coincidence!

lauriebe
Nice one Frank. Bawdsey was my first duty station when I joined the RAF late 64. Was there until May 66. The scenery is a good representation of the area.
