This Week's Meaningless Topic (#175)(Jan 12)

Recommended Posts

Hi all. As we start the new year, let's have a little comprehensive exam to see if we are smart enough to make it through. 100% score means you are brilliant, stupendous, wonderful, and ready for the new year.

THIS WEEK'S MEANINGLESS TOPIC: Orbx Forum 2024 Comprehensive Knowledge Exam.

MATHEMATICS: which formulas do not add up to three?

1. 1 brick+2 bricks

2. 2 Manchester United fans + 1 Liverpool fan

3. 2 to 1 that your horse will lose at Hannover's Neue Bult Racecourse.

BIOLOGY: which creatures have four legs?

1. Water buffalos

2. Australians after closing hours

3. Spiders

PHYSICS: answer the following foundational physics questions.

1. Can electrostatic electricity zap you if you rub a wool duck?

2. How many atoms are not enough to fill a hungry Welshman?

3. Will wave optics ever reach the top ten?

CHEMISTRY: which of the following are used in chemistry experiments?

1. The Periodic Tables

2. Beakers, test tubes, and Bunsen burners.

3. Coca Cola, rum, and a New Zealander.

LANGUAGE: which of the following are not parts of speech.

1. Noun describing a person, place, or thing.

2. Verb describing an action or state of being

3. Cockney.

HISTORY: which of the following is actually true?

1. The Anglo-Saxon Kingdom of Mercia ruled central England for 400 years.

2. Tasmanian Aboriginal history goes back over 10,000 years.

3. The three German composers, Brahms, Beethoven, and Bach, originated German techno-pop.

I'm struggling with the first section - all three seem not to add-up to 3.

MATHEMATICS: which formulas do not add up to three?

1. 1 brick+2 bricks = 2 bricks.    They are on a 3 for 2 offer at my local DIY store.

Try again Burgess

1. 1 brick+2 bricks = 1 pile of bricks.

2. 2 Manchester United fans + 1 Liverpool fan = 1 helluva fight

3. 2 to 1 that your horse will lose at Hannover's Neue Bult Racecourse = 1 (the probability that any nag I back  will lose).

I thought number 3 might be a trick question but there is such a racecourse so I could, in theory, place a bet there

I'm researching the rest.

Some early results.

BIOLOGY: which creatures have four legs?

2. Australians after closing hours - an easy one, obviously not true. The correct answer apparently is no legs (legless was the phrase which actually came up on google).

Physics

2. How many atoms are not enough to fill a hungry Welshman?

More a Chemistry question this. The answer is less than 10 x Avogadro's Constant.

1 mole has little meat on it and it takes at least 10 of the little critters to satisfy the Welshman's hunger.

CHEMISTRY: which of the following are used in chemistry experiments?

2. Beakers, test tubes, and Bunsen burners is the obvious answer but, then, what would I cook the moles with ;)

All the best,

John

You've outdone yourself Rodger.  Sorry you'll have to move across the country, but I'm nominating you for the New York State Board of Regents.  They need your input on writing Revenge Exams required for H.S. graduation. (I wrote "Regents Exams" but that darned Auto Correct changed it.  Maybe the Auto Correct is right).

I have to second / third Ken as well: What an outstanding idea and fun this exam is! But oh so difficult... Let me try.

MATHEMATICS: which formulas do not add up to three?
That is easy for me: I took my bike and within half an hour I was at the mentioned Racecourse. Nothing happened there (maybe due to the snowy weather), so this did not add up to 3.

BIOLOGY: which creatures have four legs?
Easy as well. See the picture I took in Kruger park 16 months ago:

PHYSICS: answer the following foundational physics questions.
1. Can electrostatic electricity zap you if you rub a wool duck?
I would guess: Yes.
2. How many atoms are not enough to fill a hungry Welshman?
To fill a hungry Welshman I assume you need a pie of about 750 gramm (don´t know which crazy non-metric units they use in Wales currently). Saying most of this is Carbon, Oxygen, Nitrogen and Hydrogen we use an average molar weight of the pie of 14. This makes 53 moles of the mentined atoms. As you know, a mole is 6 *10exp23 atoms.
3. Will wave optics ever reach the top ten?
Not as long as the Stones keep on releasing records.

CHEMISTRY: which of the following are used in chemistry experiments?
2. Beakers, test tubes, and Bunsen burners.
Take the proof from this 1970 science magazin:

LANGUAGE: which of the following are not parts of speech.
This answer may be offending to some, so I skip the question.

HISTORY: which of the following is actually true?
2, to my knowledge. The genocide done by the british was completed about 150 years ago, the last survivors being Truganini and Fanny Cochrane Smith. Have to say so. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Truganini

Between Gerold and John, we are approaching Einsteinian brilliance. Who knew?

 I tried not to give too much detail on Avogadro's number for fear of sparking off delayed PTSD in our honoured old coots.

A future topic perhaps - what do you remember from your school science :)

I have a South African friend who tells me we brits invented concentration camps.

Long time ago but appreciate the point.

So let's not throw stones - or is that just a British saying!

Please understand - in sorrow not in anger.

All the best,

John
