Indeed Banff is a great location - if only the airport would have a little more detail...

Must have been difficult to land your big twin plane there?

Heck, Gerold, I couldn't even locate the airport on Google Maps or Google Earth. When I looked up how to get there, it said to drive from Calgary, the nearest airport. My conclusion: Banff don't have no airport! :D

Best,

Lucky

Hi Lucky, there is one, just north to the city in front of the mountain ridge:

Best you approach over Lake Minnewaka:

But it is so small it might not be recognized as an airport by Google (I assume there employees only fly private jets).

You're right, Gerold, there is an airport.  This from Wikipedia:

Quote

Banff Airport, (IATA: YBAICAO: CYBA), is located 1.7 nautical miles (3.1 km; 2.0 mi) north northeast of Banff, Alberta, Canada. It is operated by Parks Canada, as it is located within Banff National Park

After about 10 years of being closed the airstrip was re-opened in 2007. Local environmentalists criticized the decision, saying that the decade of closure had positive effects on local wildlife. The airstrip is only used for emergency and diversionary landings.

When I set my location as CYBA I do indeed get put onto a grass strip. Again according to Wikipedia, it's 3,000 feet long... not too bad :)

Inded, a very basic grass strip this is. Hard to realize... but in a very nice location, so your flight to beautiful Banff was really worth it!
