I grew up about half a mile away from here, haunted the airport and scavenged for golf balls at the nearby course. Taking off to the south a climbing turn is needed back over the beacon to set course for Wellington. The long feature is the Boulder Bank, a natural feature that protects the port of Nelson, where as boys we used to hang out....as long as we were home for tea. Stuffed clouds over land And then over the Strait, a short patch of water but which can be very rough and at times dangerous. There is a car ferry (and you should put it on your bucket list), but it is a long windy drive from anywhere to get on it. But choose good weather and leaving the Marlborough Sounds and entering Wellington Harbour makes it a spectacular journey. On short final into Wellington R16 ILS, note the angle of crab.
