Jever, Germany

I spent a month here in Jever in the USAF with my squadron of F-111's.  That was YIKES! 33 years ago.  Good grief I hate getting old.

I actually worked in these hangars.  One poor guy, a crew chief I don't remember from which country, was told not to inspect the brakes on an F-4 as it had very hot brakes.  Well he did and he lost half his face when the wheel exploded.  We all pitched in for his reconstructive surgery and he eventually was ok.

It was a nice base, the food and beer was excellent and it was Christmastime in the snow.  I loved it!

This flight was a test flight for me as I didn't have a lot of time.

Ok, ETNJ, Jever to EDWI, Wilhelmshaven

Thanks fellas!  And my landing, well it was so bad I didn't V key it.  I'll tell ya what happened though.  I came in at a real bad angle, but I had get-on-the-ground-itis.  And this is a VERY hard plane to get right before approach, you must set up a good approach with this thing because it's so darned unforgiving.  So I landed at an angle, slid and skidded sideways all the way down the runway at about 120 kts!  It was a mess!

Excellent shots Jack.

I hope they have repaired the runway in time for all the other traffic that is due later.

:lol: It was so bad I almost had a "yard sale," that's where the plane breaks up from the monumental stresses of a hack landing! :o

Great shots Jack!  Very interesting story too.  Geez I feel for that crew chief.  Ouch.

I never knew you worked on F-111s.  One of my favourite aircraft.

I haven't actually driven the T-38 for a little while, but I have been flying the F-5E in DCS World a lot.  Boy that thing is touchy on the brakes.  Almost every landing I have skidded sideways down the runway, just hoping the tyres don't grip and turn me in to a fireball.  And that's with a good approach.  Now I have actually read the forums and (a bit of) the manual, and discovered I need to use the braking chute to slow down a lot before touching the brakes, so I have now made several successful landings.  Boy that thing makes me nervous when it touches down though.

Hi Scott.  Yes, that poor guy had quite an ordeal.  I think he was American, and if I remember correctly they sent him to Wilfred Hall in San Antonio where he spent a year.  It was huge news in Jever on base that month and we all felt sorry for him.  Hot brakes on an F-4 are nothing to mess with.

Yeah, I worked autopilot/instruments for eight years on the Aardvarks.  It was great, I got out after eight years when they sent them all to the bone yard at Davis.

So by your description and from what I read too this little rocket with wings is not easy to land.  I don't understand why they would use it as a trainer.

But it sure is fun.  I flew this thing at Mach 1 all over Palm Springs looking for that casino.  It was a fast flight, the Orbx scenery went whizzing by only slightly slower than slew speed!
