bailout3
Since my Norton I. S. is about to lapse on my win7 64 bit I am looking for input on an internet security other then Norton that won't interfere with FSX and all my addons. I really want something effective but not too controlling, if that makes sense? Pay or free as long as it works without hassles. Is there such a beast out there? Thanks
Mickel
I use ESET NOD32. You can exclude FSX related folders from the checks so it takes that bottleneck out. (which reminds me that I have to do that with my new set up...) Mike
Triplane
ESET Smart Security just sits quietly in the background and does a really good job. I've used ESET products in one form or another for years and have never, ever, had a virus or malware related problem. The footprint is small. It's as automatic as you want it to be. You'll never know it's there. A free 30-day trial is available here http://www.eset.com/us/download/free-trial/ . Doug
Adam Howarth
Security isnt a product Anyway, perhaps have a look at some actual tests to see how effective anti malware is? Such as http://www.av-comparatives.org/ Also, most wont remove PuPs which in modern times are often more of a hassle than malware. I use malware bytes free edition to check for PuPs

robrooke
im surprised you can run fsx with Norton installed, it brought my computer to its knees. had it removed & installed malwarebytes, try it for free for 16 days, then buy the premium version (about 15 dollars) regards. electricman
I run AVG free edition already for 5 years and never had a virus infection anymore, before I had Norton and had the one after the other, big plus with AVG is running FSX in full screen automatically switches AVG off so no interference with anything while running FSX and it still protects from malware to, what you could ask for more? Vora
I'm using Avira Antivirus for years without problems. The personal edition is free. We use the professional and server editions in our company. http://www.avira.com/en/avira-free-antivirus

NoLonger
I use (dare I say it) Windows Defender that comes with Windows 8.1. And with Windows 7 I used Security Essentials (which is in fact the same). I have to add though that I never visit weird sites and don't download illegal software. I keep my system very clean. I haven't had a virus or malware or anything in years. And while I am at it: I really don't understand why people still use Norton... It's almost a virus itself. electricman
Hi J van E, don't know if you knew but Windows defender doesn't actually work to much and causes a big hit on your systems performance, specialist tell to even uninstall or at least disable it if you want to run FSX. olli4740
Very happy Avast! user (freeware edition only) here. Plus the occasional check via Malwarebytes (freeware edition) and Adwcleaner (free anyway).

( Nick's bible ) Herman Afaik Nick's bible refers to the old Defender in previous Windows version. Windows 8 comes with Security Essentials built in but now renamed to Windows Defender. Security Essentials is known to have a very low impact on a systems performance. And btw I have excluded the P3D folder from checks.
electricman
Hello J van E, a friend of mine bought a laptop running on W8.1 with nothing but Windows defender a few months back, after a month it was ready for the scrapheap due to a virus on his system that even took out whole of the bios, lucky for him he had paid for an extra guarantee and the shop gave him a new one advising him very strongly to install a descend AV program and disabling this Security essentials all to gether if he didn't want to run in the same trouble again but hey, it's your money you're playing with. Voyager
It is certain and the last time experience has shown that without a good AV you are in danger on the Internet! From time to time you are taken to access a link that shows suspicious/malicious: if you don't have a good AV, you involuntarily already taken poison! So I think, the best opinion, that the developers should avoid (or check with an AV before) theirs code to be "very similar" to the virus or malwares! robccx
ESET NOD32 is what I use. It uses the least amount of background resources and it is recommended by security experts like Steve Gibson and computer gurus like Leo Laporte. I have used it for 6 years and have had no issues at all. I can not highly recommend it enough. http://www.eset.com/us/home/products/antivirus/

Herman Hm, food for thought. As I said I never had any problems, mainly because I am very careful with what I click on, but maybe I should have a closer look at some of the options. I'll check out ESET first. Thanks! EDIOT Funny. After reading various reviews and tests it seems most site think Bitdefender is the best... and it hasn't been mentioned here yet. bailout3
Thanks all...it looks like Esset might be a good place to start with the free edition to test it. If that doesn't go well I will try some of the other suggestions. One thing I do know it won't be Norton. Another question associated with this string is removing Norton sometimes isn't an easy proposition. Is there a procedure to follow beside uninstalling? I'm wondering if NS keeps some things in the registry that could cause conflictions and if so how to get rid of them? Thanks
wombat
I am with J van E and Bruce been doing that for years, just be careful what you download to your system. There is an option on the Norton site how to remove, DO NOT JUST DELETE IT. make sure you read ALL the options on the Norton site Google this 'how to remove of Nortons' and read everything, Nortons is bloatware IMHO
Triplane
+1. Using the Norton removal tool is a MUST. Trying to get rid of it any other way usually just leaves a mess. Doug
