Completely Spiteful

Recommended Posts

The Supermarine Spiteful was designed as a successor to the Spitfire.

An order was placed for 150 of the Griffon engine fighter but the advent of the jet made them obsolete so only 19 were built starting in 1944.

This one is leaving Elstree and heading east.

A low pass over Elstree.

Elstree and Hilfield Park Reservoir. A pity about the exhaust trails ahead of the Spiteful!

3.FrMCo.jpg

Passing over Watling Street and starting to climb.

4.jPAOE.jpg

Over King George's and William Girling Reservoirs. Some of the London high rise is just visible through the haze.

About to enter clouds with North Weald airfield below. The junction of the M25 and M11 can be seen.

Straight vees with minimal cropping.

Hope you enjoy.

Great set Martyn! I like especially the last one - the slightly veiled landscape below clouds and Spit (is there ice on the canopy?)

Incredible set of shots martyn, the scenery is amazing!

That's a real nice one Martyn, scenery very well presented.

Lovely collection of shots!

Verry nice shots!

Sure are a great set these mate.

cheers

Iain

Great shots! What a strange looking Spit ... looks more like a Mustang

Adam.

The wings reminded me of a Mustang too. Griffons have been fitted to Mustangs but only for racing at Reno. The Griffons are the contra-rotating ones taken from the Shackleton.

Very interesting plane Martyn and a great job showing her!!
