In these days we forget even less

Recommended Posts

I recall visiting a cemetery/memorial somewhere in Borneo, I think it was Labuan, where the Japanese surrendered to the Australian forces. A very moving experience indeed, having also visited in 1988 the memorial at Kanchunaburi  to the fallen soldiers on the infamous Burma railroad. I also met a number of ex servicemen at a reception in Bangkok. All of them were humble, honest men who felt it was their duty to serve and sought no publicity or fame. We owe our freedom to them all.

My father never returned from Guadalcanal. He died a month before I was born. My heart goes out to all those who sacrificed so much. And to their families. My thanks go out to those families in AU and NZ who have lost their loved ones in the pursuit of freedom. The world owes you and yours a deep debt of gratitude. May you and yours all rest in peace.
