That's the old home town.

Prevailing wind there is from the  North West & it funnels between the North & South Islands.

About a 20 mile sea gap carrying the Cook Strait.

If you fly Auckland to Wellington & it's a Northerly then they fly down the coastal West side of the North Island & swing around the bottom of the island, where the wind farms  on the ridges are plainly visible from the aircraft.
