VH-KDK
12571 Vought F4U Corsairs were produced from 1942-53. They served the Americans with distinction in WW2 as a land and carrier based aircraft. Because of their difficult nature only 15% of the 64000+ sorties flown were from carriers. As a fighter bomber they dropped 70% of the tonnage of bombs from fighter bombers. They had an aerial combat kill ratio of 11:1. They served in the Korean conflict as a ground support aircraft. They were involved in dogfights with aircraft such as the Yak-9 but with the introduction of the MIG 15 they were totally outclassed. However one F4U did manage to shoot down a MIG 15 which was out turned by the Corsair. Corsairs of the Honduran Air Force shot down 2 Corsairs and 1 Cavalier Mustang of the El Savadorian Air Force in 1969 which was the last prop on prop kills in history. The Corsair served with many air arms including France, New Zealand, The UK and Argentina. 1. Leaving Elmendorf AFB. 2. Heading north over the Knik Arm. 3. Time for a roll. The Point MacKenzie Farms and Forestry area is seen behind. 4. Now a loop with the Deshka and Yentna Rivers. 5. The rivers again with Mount Susitna through the haze. 6. Back over Elmendorf again with the AN/FLR-9 antenna array top right. 7. Passing over the Glenn Highway. 8. 9. Short finals on 24. Sweaty palm time. 10. Safely down on the 3rd bounce with 2 of Elmendorf's younger residents looking on. In real life the Corsair was renowned for bouncing on landing which made it a handful on carrier landings. Another scary problem was the tendency of the port wing to stall at slow speed with a sudden increase of power resulting in the aircraft ending up upside down with obvious results at low altitude. Both problems were fixed.
