Doc_Z
The controllers there are all volunteers. There are very strict rules for traffic at Oshkosh and, for the most part, they are followed by the vast majority of the pilots. At least in my experience flying in there several times. But wore betide the one who decides to do it is own way!!!
Bassman
That's insane! Those controllers are way cool in many ways.
Gypsy Pilot
Once again events have proven that intelligence ( it requires intelligence to become a pilot ) has no real relationship to idiocy. All those idiots had to do is count to 30 before passing the same point as the aircraft in front of them to maintain the asked for 3/4 mile separation. Nowadays, it seems, there are many pilots out there with way more airplane than skill.
Rodger Pettichord
Some of the Oshkosh ATC conversations sound like they hire nothing but saints as controllers. E.G. "Runway 8. No, runway 8! That's 8, not 26. GO AROUND. GO AROUND!" Does make you wonder about flying into that circus.
Doc_Z
One year that I was there, a controller friend was working Oshkosh and invited me up. It was chaos, indeed. They only worked 15 minutes on and 15 off to catch their breath. And that was in the middle of the week when traffic was comparatively light. olderndirt
Back when I was in that line of work, it was considered an honor to be selected for the Oshkosh crew. These guys were/are the best of the best.
Gypsy Pilot
It was much easier for the controllers when it ended. It's hard to cut the line when you are lined up on a taxiway.
flyingleaf
It's always better to arrive in Oshkosh Alive than any other way.
Gypsy Pilot
One of the first rules for safety. Arriving Alive always beats Arriving On Time
