Monterey to Half Moon Bay with Carenado C182T

I never land at Monterey, nor Half Moon Bay. For the first one, when I'm moving from San Diego to the north, I usually prefer any stop in central valley to assure VFR weather. Shafter Minter is my favorite. Once weather wasn't good enough and I rent a car instead of a Cessna and drive all along US1 to Monterey. I love my trip here and the view from the (old) Best Western Beach Front.

The great Hirez around Monterey field

For the second (Half Moon Bay), it's a running gag/private joke with a friend who is IFR (I'm only VFR). Half Moon Bay had never be a good choice for me when I want to go to San Francisco. For sure, the coast is great but it's the fog-dreamer. I usually pick-up Oakland or better, Concord (KCCR) which has a direct link with the BART to reach easily downtown. But it's another story.

I checked this morning the weather in this area. And I was suprised to have clear sky at Half Moon Bay. No time to waste. Let's lauch Prepar3D (v2.4) with the cloud.fx (fix for vertical & rotating cloud) and let's test this area with this short hop. I also have North California region and the freeware Orbx Half Moon Bay. Everything should get fine !

The ramp is full of General Aviation aircraft... like in real. We are not in Europe. This makes the real ambiance of this US field. Love it.

Easy to taxi : just follow the previous aircraft taxiing to your same holding point

Holding point Alpha 10R. From the stand point, I have the feeling it's a cliff and the sea is just behind, but the truth is :

The weather at that altitude, doesn't allow me to flight straight. I have to make some turn to stay VMC.

Thanks to all

and where did you find the freeware half moon bay?

Also wondering about the "Freeware ORBX Half Moon Bay"??

Oups... Should be my mistake. I first believe I picked it from an NA Airport Freeware pack. But after browser all the 17 pack I couldn't find it.

The Half Moon Bay should be the one updated (compared to default) via the FTX North California  :-

  • 2 weeks later...

Truly enjoyed the shot of the golfers standing on the green at the 8th Hole (Par 3) - been there many times in the early 1990s when it was a Navy course.  The interesting hole was the 6th - a Par 5 dogleg left with the poles for the runway extended C/L lights as an added obstacle.  The approach came directly over the tee box.  Once was about to tee off when a 737 came in - you could clearly see the pilots' faces.  When that happened, you had to wait about 30 seconds for the wake vortexes to dissipate or they would "redirect" your tee shot (probably would have helped mine) - you could actually hear the vortexes - a sharp swishing sound - as they passed.

I always thought that hole should have been plugged into the Monterey Tower ATC…"Golfer on hole six, cleared for tee off, caution, wake turbulence."  ;)
