The Super DC-3(R4D-8)

Recommended Posts

This version of the DC-3 first flew in 1949.

It had a I metre fuselage stretch, re designed wings and tail. More powerful engines were fitted along with flush riveting  and streamlined antennas, in fact more than 75% of the original DC-3 was changed giving it a top speed of 250mph. However it was too expensive for the customers it was designed for and only 3 were sold to Capital Airlines. The Navy had 100 RD4s modified to Super DC-3  standards designated RD4-8 which were later redesignated C-117D.
