Anzac Day, 25 April, is probably Australia's most important national occasion. It marks the anniversary of the first campaign that led to major casualties for Australian and New Zealand forces during World War One and commemorates all the conflicts that followed.

This year marks the centenary of that first bloody battle on the shores of Gallipoli. It will be remembered across the country and in Turkey with special ceremonies and exhibitions.

This year is not the centenary, I clipped that from an earlier article.

The date 25 April was officially named Anzac Day in 1916; in that year it was marked by a wide variety of ceremonies and services in Australia, New Zealand and London. In New Zealand it was gazetted as a half-day holiday.

Yes, a lot of events got cancelled. Thinking of the Olympics and the Soccer European masters.

Her in our back yard the annual Cape Argus Cycle race, the Cape Epic and the Comrades Marathon, that attract a huge amount of athletes from around the world have also been cancelled.

Better this way, than spreading the virus even further.
