Part 4 - UK WW2 Heritage-Listed Airfields

Recommended Posts

Enjoy British WW2 aircraft over UK WW2 heritage-listed RAF airfields - Part 4.  Cheers.

Avro York transport (developed from the Avro Lancaster bomber in 1944) over East Kirby, Lincolnshire, opened in 1943 in support of Bomber Command’s offensive, with airmen from nearly 200 Commonwealth countries operating from it.

Bristol Beaufighter fighter/multi-purpose aircraft over Elvington, Yorkshire, opened October 1942. Halifax Bombers based at Elvington were heavily engaged in the Battle of the Ruhr in early 1943 and in May and June 1944, two heavy bomber squadrons of the Free French Air Force formed there.

A great series of shots there Frank.

For those that don't know the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre is located at East Kirby.  This was set up by two brothers to commemorate the 55,000 airmen of Bomber Command who lost their lives in WWII including their third brother who died over Germany in a Halifax raid.

Visitors can pay for a runway taxi ride in a restored Lancaster Bomber NX611 "Just Jane".  A work colleague has experienced this whilst sitting in the Bomb Aimers position and cannot recommend it enough.

They also have a restored D.H. Mosquito "Spirit of Val" which has now performed engine runs

Nice looking airports - are they available somewhere?

Hi olderndirt, nice to hear from you.

East Kirby is now disused and the pic is just what you see in orbx TE.

For Elvington, there is a WW2 version which is the one in my pic.

There is also an Elvington Yorkshire Air Museum version.

This is all XP stuff.  Cheers.
