Thanks, Adam.  There's a book about the event, well worth reading: "A Higher Call" by Adam Makos. It recounts the true story of a German Luftwaffe fighter pilot, Franz Stigler, who encountered a damaged American B-17 bomber during World War II and chose not to shoot it down, instead escorting it to safety.

These sort of acts are interesting. On one hand, very considerate. On the other hand, defeats the prime purpose of making sure the other side cannot fight again. Terrible business!
