Unusual though, normally a single engine failure would be a PAN call, Mayday is for dire life threatening issues. As most (all)  twin engine passenger jets can fly with a single engine then although the issue is serious it was not a Mayday - unless of course there were other issues. No doubt this will all come out in due course. As you say a wonderful result whatever the semantics.

According to officials the captain altered the Maday into a PAN shortly after.

Normally it would be a mayday initially to get attention and let everyone know what’s going on and then downgrade to a pan if it’s all under control. Some countries don’t really recognise a pan.
