BUG REPORT - B248 Hartland, North Devon

Recommended Posts

Hi,

When attempting to 'fly' x-plane in my location of residence I experience the main road out of the village (B248 Hartland, North Devon) as being higher than the surrounding territory. There is a similar error when 'over-flying' the B233 from the Junction with the A39 toward Instow. Both are on stilts that don't exist in the real world.

The error in Orbx is less than the case when using the default scenery, but present nevertheless.

Is there a method to remedy this problem?

I am using transparent road surfaces, rather than the default X-plane ones, but this simply changes the colour yet makes no difference to the height problem described.

Any help will be appreciated.

Many thanks,

Stephen

Hi. You need to attach also a couple of pics with the coordinates showing so that the   potential anomaly can be seen. What is the nearest airport you are flying from to see this? Please also remember that it is a sim and cannot be 100% accurate regarding elevations because of XP restrictions. Your anomaly is probably to do with Mesh rather than the photscenery, which will be accurate,

Thank you for your replies. Sorry I was busy yesterday and couldn't respond to you sooner.

I am attaching 3 images of the first and main problem.

Image one (1) is a view of the road as it should appear in the village of Hartland just before the place that the long flyover appears.

Image two (2) shows the scale of the non-existent flyover. It is high, goes on for many miles and is quite simply fictional. The real road simply follows the contours of the land.

Image three (3) shows where the end of the fictional flyover (the B248) meets the accurate A39 near Clovelly Cross.

The fictional flyover causes a number of problems beyond being inaccurate and unsightly. Smaller roads can no longer feed into it because they're on a lower level and simply end underneath it.

I hope this helps.

Regards,

Stephen

Hi Jon,

Thanks for your swift reply.

I flew from Lundy Airport (EG69) but have a saved flight where I have landed the Eurofox in a field behind my home.

The fault occurs with, or without, Orbx and any other custom sceneries. Indeed, I partly purchased Orbx South because I thought it might correct it.

I am attaching the current scenery_packs.ini.

Regads,

Stephen

@SJMB Your scenery_packs is all wrong and you have relabelled some things. You have TEGB South saying it is enclosed in other folders:

SCENERY_PACK /Volumes/Samsung_T5/XPlane_Orbis_Lib/xp11/TrueEarth Great Britain South/Custom Scenery/Orbx_A_EGLH_Needles/ ??????
SCENERY_PACK /Volumes/Samsung_T5/XPlane_Orbis_Lib/xp11/TrueEarth Great Britain South/Custom Scenery/Orbx_A_GB_South_TrueEarth_Custom/

SCENERY_PACK /Volumes/Samsung_T5/XPlane_Orbis_Lib/xp11/Orbx Libraries/Custom Scenery/Orbx_OrbxlibsXP/

I will find it very difficult to rearrange it for you to drop straight back into Custom Scenery but will show you what it should look like:

You will have to arrange your additional prefixes to the scenery titles but honestly they are far too complex. Things like

Volumes/Samsung_T5_Orbis_Lib/xp11 are totally superfluous and will potentially cause incorrect layering in the scenery_packs,ini and subsequent conflicts. I know that Orbx Central would not have installed the Orbx TEGBs at the top of the scenry_packs. The prefixes will cause confusion.

If you have install the TEGB South on a different disk, which I suspect you have, then that is fine. What you can do instead of all the prefix names you have given, is open the Samsung_T5 disk and create shortcuts or symbolic links to the the files and drop those links into your Custom Scenery folder. No need for all the prefixes.

I am showing you what a portion of my scenery_packs.ini looks like and note that the sceneries shown are on 3 different disks, but nowhere is there mention of any confusing prefixes.

Hi Jon,

Thank you for your help.

I've now installed your suggested scenery_packs.ini.

You're correct to think that I moved the installation to a faster disk, hence the problem with them.

But the difficulty of the fictional flyover also existed on the original installation with a Vanilla installl of both X-plane and Orbx South.

Unfortunately, it persists using your corrected scenery_packs.ini.

What do you suggest I do next?

Ah, I have a problem. X-Plane is rewriting the scenery_packs.ini back to something like the original version I sent to you earlier overwriting all your suggested changes. I am using a MacBook Pro running High Sierra and modifying the files to your directions using TextEdit.

Orbx South is loaded in another folder because that was an option offered at the installation.

The prefixes you mention result from creating new shortcuts for the Orbx folder on the Samsun T5 disk. These were created by the MacBook rather than being my choice. I will attempt to find a way to edit them.

Just a thought - is anyone with a healthy X-Plane installation able to check and see if they too can see these fictitious overpasses in ORBX South?

Much as I will ensure the scenery_packs.ini is configured properly on the new SSD I am curious to see if it's a scenery packs problem or an ORBX South problem.

Many thanks,

Stephen

You need to provide more details like coordinates and nearest airfield etc for anyone to see if they can replicate. I have no idea where to start looking.

As a test, disable or temporarily remove all other addons except for Global Airports , TEGB South and OrbxLibs. This will then see if it is anTEGB South problem, as nothing else will be able to potentially conflict. The scenery_packs.ini will also only have. Run XP and then exit XP. Open the scenery_packs.ini and make sure that TEGB South files are just below Global Airports.

OK, Here's a plan. As mentioned above the nearest airfield is Lundy Island EG69. The coordinates are obvious because I have stated specific places in the thread. This is what I am going to do.

1. Format the new SSD and instal a clean version of X-plane.

2. Connect to Orbx Central and download a clean version of Orbx South.

3. Without installing anything else check and see if the flyover is still there.

4. Report back with images.

That should provide the information we need and solve the scenery_ini problem :)

Thanks,

Stephen

Good plan but ensure you also install OrbxLibs. By the way I know where Lundy is but naming specific places means nothing nor are they obvious. The forum help is based on not only XP support people like myself but community members from all over the world who have no idea of place names or locations but understand coordinates. I trust you understand.

I am new to X-plane. Are coordinates something I may find in a file in the sim or must I read them using a map?

  • 3 weeks later...

Hello Jon,

Sorry to have taken so long to respond. In the end I decided to eliminate as many variables as possible in a bid to diagnose the problem.

I decided to purchase a new computer so as to eliminate any suggestion of the program suffering from slowness or memory deficiency. The specs of the machine are as follows:

Windows 10 (Home)
Intel Core (R) Core (TM) i7-9700 CPU @ 3.00 GHz
Ram 32 GB
64 Bit Operating System

I then installed a clean version of X-plane 11 and a clean version of Orbx South. I validated the Orbx installation using the facility at the Orbx Central software.

Unfortunately the problem of the non-existent flyover persists on the (B2348).

At the Hartland end lat 50.991 lon -4.4719 there is a gentle incline up and onto the flyover.

Where the flyover meets the main road (B3248 - A39) there is a sharp incline as steep as any stepladder.

I am attaching photos to illustrate the problem.

Before I do so I will also post the latest log, which gives details of the scenery and it's order for loading.

As you can see from the photographs Orbx isn't rendering a remotely accurate picture of this road and I am now at a loss as to further possibilities. Maybe there is a patch, or update, I am missing?

Anyway, what do you think?

Regards,

Stephen

Hi. I'm afraid your Log is rather meaningless as it doesn't show TEGB as installed. In an earlier post you stated that this elevation error is evident with or without Orbx:

"I flew from Lundy Airport (EG69) but have a saved flight where I have landed the Eurofox in a field behind my home.
The fault occurs with, or without, Orbx and any other custom sceneries. Indeed, I partly purchased Orbx South because I thought it might correct it."

To find out if it is an Orbx problem, do the following:

Rename your Custom Scenery folder to Custom Scenery.bak

Create a new Folder called Custom Scenery. In that new folder make place shortcut links to TEGB South Custom, Overlay and Orthos, OrbxLibs XP and Global Airports. To make a shortcut you just right click on for example TEGB South Custom folder and send it to desktop. After you have done that for the 5  mentioned folders, take each one and place the shortcut link into the new Custom Scenery folder. Start XP and then exit. In the new folder will be your shortcut links and a new scenery_packs.ini.

Open the scenery_packs.ini and arrange via cut and paste the scenery in the following order:

Global Airports

TEGB South Custom

TEGB South Overlay

TEGB South Orthos

OrbxLibs XP

Try you usual flight where you are seeing the elevation anomalies. If they are still there then it is something in the TEGB South Mesh/roads files causing the anomaly, OR it is how it was made by Orbx and can be referred to the devs for comment.

I do remind you that it is a simulator and 100% accuracy of detail cannot be guaranteed. For example my house is facing the wrong way from real life !

Hi Jon,

I have followed your instructions precisely and the over-pass is still present.

Of course, I understand that scenery won't be precise - for example my own house seems to be a terrace whereas it's a semi. That's O.K.

This overpass, however represents around 3 - 4 miles of road. It's also an embarrassment because when neighbours come they naturally want to look around the area and the girt thing stands out like a sore thumb.

You will know best, but do you think it may be time to refer this to the developer?

Many thanks in anticipation of your thoughts,

Stephen

P.S. Latest screenshot attached.
