  1. As usual, the hardest part of the comp is working which out of the gazillion screenshots get dumped. All these were taken in MSFS over NZ (Orbx NZ Mesh). MSFS has its faults, but the eye candy is wonderful!

  2. Many thanks to all that voted for my shot - and, of course, to Orbx for the prize!!

I remember having fun with the PAC Crescos and Fu42s in FSX and P3D, so it's great to have another Pacific aircraft appearing in MSFS. Here's my maiden flight - from Queenstown (NZQN) to Mount Cook (NZMC) ... with Orbx NZ Mesh doing the honours ...

I hope he also does the T-28 for MSFS.  I loved his T-28s for FSX/P3D.

Me too ... I had all his T-28s for P3D.

Brilliant and beautiful shots Adam! I’m trying hard to keep me wallet in my pocket!

You won't regret it - it's one of the best, IMHO.

I wish Mr. Lynch would release a more modern plane.  No offense but simply not into the old planes.

No offence taken ;) ... me - I hate all those [s]wanky new bizjets, so this is right up my street. I've had a couple of flights in a Tiger Moth in RL, so this is especially welcome.

Thanks for all the nice comments, folks!

  4. Another absolutely *superb* contribution from Anthony Lynch. The MSFS Tiger Moth isn't just a port-over from his P3D model - it's a completely new aircraft - with all sorts of amazing, carefully thought out features.

Here's NZMF to start with ... a pretty grubby day for VFR, but worth a go!

  5. Nick's post (as linked) is pretty comprehensive. I'd be very surprised indeed if you can't get it to work using one of his methods. Before he posted that guide, I'd already got mine working using symlinks alone - but opted in the end for the .ini rename method he mentions. None of these approaches take long and aren't *that* complicated - I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Bear in mind that these (hopefully) are only *temporary* workarounds - and that a proper solution will no doubt follow once XP12 has come out of beta and the Orbx devs can can finish the job. I've always been a great fan of Orbx Central, so letting it do the job for us has to be the best option.

  6. Not so much a review - more like an in-depth comparison of XP11, XP12 and MSFS. It's superbly put together - and [very] definitely worth a read.

Thanks for posting the link - good find!

BTW - one of the points it raises is people's expectations with the scenery. XP can't compete with MSFS photogrametry (and cloud storage) but at least you won't be getting those irritating "Lost connection" errors ;). However - it's worth noting that Orbx scenery makes up the difference. So far, I've only reinstalled all my UK stuff and it looks damn' good! So ... if you can restrict your flying to Orbx-covered areas, you're still in for a treat. Without Orbx, I have to say it's pretty crude - but it's not *that* bad - and many of the pluses of XP12 go a long way to compensate. That article explains it all very well.

Thanks Adam. Would you have a view as to what the likely impact would be, if this entry wasn’t manually moved as you state?  The reason I ask is because I followed Nick’s ‘method 2’, this letting Orbx Central dictate the ini file.

To be perfectly honest - I don't know!! As with many things in the sim world, there's lots of conflicting views and/or advice out there.

However - as Orbx Central (in its current form) doesn't fully support XP12, I'd be more inclined to think that leaving that line out is an undesirable side-effect. Also - as regards *ordering* within the ini file - I'm not sure whether it's important in v12 or whether it does its own internal re-ordering. I've not done enough tests to know one way or another.

v12 is an early release beta, so we're all learning as we go.

  8. Just an addendum to Nick's comprehensive instructions:

If you add/remove or reinstall anything via Orbx Central, your scenery_packs.ini file may remove the SCENERY_PACK *GLOBAL AIRPORTS* entry - which usually goes below all airport entries and above any Custom, Overlay or Ortho entries.

  9. I managed to sort out all my Orbx scenery (phew!!). It appears I'd been creating the symlinks incorrectly - and didn't have the correct order in the scenery ini file.

Here's the VSkyLabs C-47 over Gloucestershire (TEGBS) - as beautiful in XP12 as it was in XP11:

    C-47-TEGB-01-1350.jpg?dl=1

The only complication was with airports that use the Scenery Animation Manager (SAM) plugin - which used to run in the XP11 folder (which, of course, I'd removed LOL). These included Leeds/Bradford, Edinburgh etc. - but I got them working by installing SAM manually (ie. not via Orbx Central).:
    https://stairportscenerieshelp.freshdesk.com/support/solutions/articles/77000004353-installation

Needless to say, it's probably not a great idea to spam the Orbx forums with customers-created workarounds for scenery that will (hopefully) be updated by Orbx soon. There are a couple of useful threads on Avsim that may help those that are impatient and want to get their hands dirty!

On a more positive note - in my limited testing (for the UK addons only), I couldn't spot any obvious "gotchas". Orbx scenery and airports worked fine - and looked stunning!

  10. Jon - no workee for me - even if I copied the scenery directly into the XP12 folder (ie. no symlinks).

Nick - I totally agree. A definitive solution needs to come down from the Orbx devs themselves. I don't think either Jon or myself are proposing these as anything than temporary kludges - just to keep us vaguely happy until things get sorted ... which may take a while, as I suspect MSFS is hogging the limelight just now ;)

  11. UPDATE: Well ... I'm afraid simply linking to any of the Orbx products isn't going to work :(

None of them showed up in the sim and, looking at the file & folder structure, they're very different. If nothing else, they'd need a fair bit of re-organising. I tried a bit of manual shuffling around, attempting to mimic a bundled addon but no luck.

So ... long story short ... it's a job for the professionals - and it looks like we'll have to be patient and wait for the devs to do the updates!

  12. I've just installed X-Plane v12, but had to wipe most of my XP11 related stuff - scenery, aircraft etc. because of lack of room.

What's the state of play as regards Orbx v11 scenery compatibility with v12?

What's the procedure to reinstall into a fresh XP12 via Orbx Central?

Correction: I have all my Orbx XP11 scenery on a separate drive. Do I just need to create symlinks to them?

  13. Maybe in the old days ... I mean in Victorian times (when children were still being sent up chimneys) and thick, yellow smog would blanket the city!!

I've always thought (with FSX, P3D and now MSFS) that the transition times around morning or evening have always been totally up the creek. Far too abrupt - and far to early (or late).
