Orbx is not a single entity as you might think, it's a collection of developers who retain some say in how their products are offered (as far as I know anyway) so a 'normal' business model might not work under the Orbx structure.

    Good point! BUT ...

... I think that's also true for JustFlight (a mixture of their own products+other devs) ... yet their points system applies across the board.

  2. The EULA answers my question: "Can I use Orbs along with regular purchases (as a discount)"?

Orbs cannot be used (at this stage) for:

    • Gifting products to other users
    • Applying discounts to product purchases.
    • Some selected products.

I think this is a huge mistake! Many other companies have similar schemes and allow this.

The screenshot competition prize is now Orbs. Is it a coincidence there are less entries into the comp?

I enter the comps mainly for fun - but, as I'm retired (and on a pension), I'm always very grateful for the bonus of a payware product that I couldn't afford.

I too was disappointed by the limited range of MSFS products available with Orbs. It wouldn't surprise me if the low comp turnout was because of the reduced incentive of Orbs prizes.

The screencomps can be a really good showcase for Orbx products and, after all, these prizes aren't physical boxes that need to be stocked/delivered - so Orbx shouldn't really be losing that much revenue (if any).

For example - if I win a prize and choose a product that I maybe wouldn't have actually bought, then Orbx haven't lost any revenue from me - but what they *do* get is a series of "thank you" posts that showcase the product. If the showcase screenshots are by people that win comps, then you'd expect their quality to be above average - so making great publicity for Orbx.

  4. Thanks, Matt - that's all good to know. Looks like it may be worth me keeping my XP12 alive after all. I had been wondering whether I can afford to buy addons for *both* sims - and if XP12 was going to lose active development from developers like Orbx, then I should pull the plug on it. The problem is that I actually like both sims! Each has its own strengths and weaknesses.

As all this storage space mounts up (for either sim), I can now see the logic of keeping so much on the Cloud - it's going to be increasingly difficult to store all that data locally. I've always hated having to be so reliant on online services (as NZ connectivity isn't as good as in other countries) but I suppose it's inevitable really.

  5. XP12 finally came out of beta, so I've updated my setup. Now I have to remake all my bindings etc. I've been in MSFS for so long I've forgotten how I set it all up - so it's a labour of love, so to speak!

I appreciate some of my old XP11 scenery can be persuaded to work (with the usual caveats) but I'm wondering just how committed Orbx are to XP12 - seeing as the MSFS bandwagon seems to eclipse X_Plnne - a perfectly decent sim in its own right.

What are Orbx's plans, long term, with respect to XP12? - updating XP11 scenery and/or any new [native XP12] scenery?

Apologies if this has already been answered somewhere!

... Thranda does a good one for Xplane...

I have XP12 installed. As soon as we get more Orbx scenery working with it I might spend more time with XP - and would enjoy having an XP Wilga to play with. Does anyoneknow if the Thranda version is XP12 compatible?

  7. This really is a superb addon from GotFriends. Packed full of features and wonderfully detailed. I've looked around one in RL - and it's just as quirky as it looks ... but so full of character.

As usual - NZMF as a starting point:

    Nice camouflage ..

  8. Thanks again to all that voted for my NZMF (Milford Sound) entry - and, of course, to Orbx for awarding the prize: the superb Maryadi/Miltech Simulations MV-22B Osprey.

What better place for a photo session than the original NZMF <?> - with a quick lash-up/fictional RNZAF livery so I'm cleared for NZ skies:

    Osprey-NZ4081-NZMF-03-1350.jpg?dl=1

I turned on MSFS Live weather (hmmmm) - it's early summer here in NZ!!!

    Normal service is resumed!

I really enjoy these screencomps (themed or un-themed) a great excuse to indulge in an eye-candy fest. MSFS has many shortcomings as a sim, but it really shines in the visuals. With Orbx mesh laying down a sensible foundation for the textures, you can get some stunning scenery.

    Thanks again,

    Adam.

  9. Thanks for the encouragement, folks!!! Yes - the great thing about NZ topography is that there's so much variety - all crammed into a small area, so distances are never that great.

I must admit I looked long and hard at #3 - and just couldn't decide which of the two was better. Judging by the reaction here I should think about swapping them over!!!
