Hi everyone,

I thought it was about time to add my set-up to the list.

Computer is nothing special to look at (just a box) so no real photos of that  :D  Intel I7 4.02 OC 6 gig ram air cooled, NVidia GTX470, Sound Blaster XFI Fatality .

My rig is not a dedicated flight sim computer but also serves as the Media Center/Blu-ray player. Case is a Lian Li PC-C32 with two 120mm fans in the center as opposed to at the front and back. Maxed out for HDD spaces with 40GB SSD for OS, 80GB SSD for FSX, 1TB and 2TB 5400rpm HDDs for media plus combo Blu-ray/HD-DVD drive and Zalman CNPS9500 CPU cooler, outputting to a Vizio 47" 1080p LCD TV.

And its finally my turn.

I just upgraded I'm now running my i7 860 at 4.0GHz (thanks to Stephen and others from the Backcountry prop club). Got a new IronClad IN WIN RT Full tower, as well as Kingston HyperX 4GB (2 x 2GB) SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800), an Asus P7H55-USB3 motherboard, and a Cooler Master V6 CPU cooler.

Here are a few shots. Excuse the messy cords, they will be cleaned up.....sometime.... :)

K, just re-arranged the whole game-room/wife´s office, and yes, that combination actually CAN work :o;)(separate desks, though!). Of course the re-arranging was not my idea ::). But, I got a chance to re-wire the whole shabang. And having my flight desk in the other end of the room actually works quite well. So, it was worth the hernia and the back ache ;D (had a huge book shelf and a guest bed and a ton of books to move about as well).

You see all the gear in a bundled mess of wires here, ready to be sorted and connected. Looks pretty much as it was before I moved it! ;D

Found the sign at a flea market along the Seine a couple of years ago, very fitting, wouldn´t you say?!

Posted Image

A wider view of the whole setup (while the desk is still tidy, which is...2-3 minutes, tops ::)) The seat is a car seat on a swivel, functions quite well, turns, leans back and slides back and forth. It´s from a prehistoric Mitsubishi, in case you´re wondering ;).

Posted Image

I think as a token of appreciation for the daunting task of re-arranging everything, my wife told me to hang this photo on the wall, has been tucked away for some years. I must have a special place in her heart, ´cause that´s definitely not her kind of art work 8) (Magritte´s pipe hanging on the wall she´ll be facing now). The photo is taken at Karup AFB, where (formerly East) German MIG-29 popped by for a visit. Some friends of the fammily work there and got me the picture, and I had it framed.

Lastly, my favourite badges lying on the base of my center screen.

Ready for take-off!

Bjorn,

What an incredible setup! I now know at least one place to visit if I am in your neck of the woods!

Kind regards,

Shipdriver,

Nice home theatre! It looks like just the right place to sit down in front of and enjoy, whether flying flight sim, playing games, watching movies or jumping up and down during hockey (the ultimate)!  :P

Hi Ken,

When flying FSX I like being in a corner like that, with a window to shed light on the real world. Yours looks like a great setup. What island is that on the wall behind your rig? Is that one of the islands in PNW or just off the coast of New Zealand somewhere?  ;)

Hi Stephen

The map is a small island off the coast of New Zealand called Australia, hopefully you would of heard of it    ;D. As you can see my main screen is a 42 inch samsung 3D ,although we are still waiting for NVIDIA to release the 3dtv Now software. My next addition to the setup is to be a Butt kicker subwoofer to the base of the chair. I had one of there older versions and it was awsome until it burnt itself out. Its good to see you were able to haapily move your office around as you can see from my photo Jenny has her computer desk right along side me. It makes for a very happy relationship.

I feel like I am a total amateur.  I have ONE measly monitor.  And ONE measly joy stick.  And my pedals are broken.

Are you able to share with me the cost of a setup like yours?  I think my monitor is exactly the same, Samsung 2233 except that you have 3 of them, that alone is likely $600 CA.

I´ve collected all the items over some years, I think my pedals and yoke are about five years old now. Can´t exactly say what the cost is, but I can list the items and you can look them up.

Monitors: Samsung SM 2053BW

TripleHead2Go digital

TrackIR 4

Saitek yoke, pedals and additional throttle

Thrustmaster Cougar

Old car seat welded onto swivel, board fixed underneath to hold hotas

Then the pc, which has undergone numerous changes over the last 2 years.

The priciest item I think is my Cougar hotas, it´s not been used intensively, so it´s still holding up. Would like the new A10 hotas (drool). I remember the pedals being my top priority when starting to "build". I think my next acquisition will be an acer touch screen, but not until PMDG´s 737NG is released, so I´ll probably have another year to put funds aside.

And how do I keep it tidy, Macca?! Spending hours of finding the right way to pair different wires and wrap them in plastic tubes (the white tubes you see). I curse and swear and sweat while arranging, but in the end it´s worth it.

Hey Brian,

This thread is not supposed to make anyone feel bad because of comparisons! Before too long I will have the oldest rig in here I bet. It is about getting to know each other more than anything else. If it was just about the hardware and software we would not be on the forums sharing with each other at all.

Kind regards,

Stephen, I of course was just joking, I'm pretty happy with my simpler setup and fast computer.  Life is all about priorities.  We determine them everyday.

Earlier when you started this post, I posted "my rig" me new 5th wheel and HD truck to pull it.  That was more my priority.  But I am itching to get some new pedals.

I haven't photographed mine as it looks much like the others, Antec case, two screens, CH yoke, Saitek pedals and autopilot multi functional unit.

But what a mssive expenditure in total, what a lot of skill and enthusiasm to make a clunky, unfinished FSX run close to properly.  Do you think Intel and nVidia share the profits?  No, no just a joke.

MS should be ashamed of themselves and they had better allow Flight to settle down before they sack the developers.

But in the end don't we love it, and what a great group of people have come together to discuss, learn and enjoy the process and build some great systems.

Update December 7, 2010

Time for a refresh of the pictures of my FSX computer.

The Zotac 580 GTX is the exact same length as the EVGA 480 GTX, and it's a very good thing for there is not a mm to spare. The new card is a lot lighter weight though. Here it is plugged in and joining the Christmas festivities

[img width=525 height=700]http://fsfiles.org/flightsimshots/images/612Christmas_Lights.jpg

It now has 2 x G.Skill SSDs in Raid 0 formation, blazing fast!. Here they are sandwhiched between the 1,000g, the 640 and the 500

After all the work and money, this is what it is supposed be about: Flying:

Superb Stephen.  I am convinced that a HD TV with a fast refresh rate and smoothing is every bit as good as a conventional monitor.  Just about every other item of equipment is the same as mine, but how do you get your keyboard to sit their so well.

Nice lighting in your rig, Stephen! What do you need a christmas tree for??! ;D Which brand are the fans? Are they quiet?

Speaking of HDTV's as monitors, what are your opinions on a 120Hz TV? Do you set the vid card refresh rate on the vid card to 120Hz? Is there any noticable difference with FSX? Or with other games like first person shooters? I've been thinking of upgrading my 32" 1080p @ 60 Hz to a 40" 1080p @ 120 Hz.  (prices on TV's are really dropping but I'm a little scared to pull the trigger :)

Oh, and I'll throw down a pic of the latest mod.

Go BIGGER!  For not too much more - you can get a 47-48". The Black Level on the LG is awesome! My GPU is connected via AVI to HDMI and I'm positive that it is running in 60hz (PC) mode.

A few more pics of the modding. 2 new 92mm fans in the front and  cutting space for the added rad to fit. Hindsight being 20/20 and all it would have been much easier to have gotten the cosmos S case, or a different case all together.  Water cooling parts are pretty much all Koolance products. A pump/res/fan controller/pump controller in one unit=pretty sweet. 3 rads (120x3 and 2 120x1), cpu and gpu water blocks, hose, fittings, etc.

I'm still torn about a new LCD.  ??? decisions decisions  :-\

Here's mine, i really wish some one like Spirit Flyer would go over with me how to boost this rig up . It's ok but 3.2 just isn't enough it seems to run this Orbx  stuff, and ever if i could get it up to say 3.8 i would be happy. But i'm not gonna start playing around with the Turbo settings without some one going over it with me.

Hi Louis,

Nice to see another fellow Canadian. I stayed at Camp Caroline a number of times! If you come and join us with another computer on Teamspeak with the Back Country Prop Club I can walk you through an overclock. Or alternatively we can go through the steps using online photos like those found elsewhere in this forum. I think it is called Bios Overclocking Examples, or something like that at http://orbxsystems.com/forums/index.php?topic=25015.0. What are your CPU operating temperatures like?

Kind regards,

Those are recommended limits. It´s my understanding that the free-ware program RealTemp is as precise as you can get temp.wise. To ensure good temperatures I´d recommend you clean out the filters on your nine-O-two case to ensure good air flow. If your vacume cleaner is strong enough, you may just be able to remove the dust without taking the filters out. Your top fan would probably need a wipe down on the leading edges.
