Pictures of our Flight Sim Computers

Recommended Posts

Bonjour TENBLADE,

Yes there are 3 monitors behind the cockpit, running off the server computer, which also has another "control" monitor (out of view of the cockpit photos) that I use for setup etc. The metal masques for each aircraft were made for me here in France, and the panel configuration done with a commercially available software product ... details if you wish to contact me by direct email.

Another cockpit attached (the default cessna) ... !

That is quite an undertaking, linking up that many pc´s. I´ll never have room or support for that much, I´m afraid  ::) (My stewardess is actually the captain around here  ;D )

Great rig. What´s there to improve, TrackIR 5 perhaps?!

Damn! If you put some plasmas in there...

Very very nice work dave!

I'm running her at 4.5Ghz. FSX is pretty smooth, but its never enough!  I was debating going with triple monitors but I'm very happy with the 32" LCD tv for a monitor.

Bones great rig I am full of envy.

Ian:  because you showed these pics, you must have got the dust well gone by now:  but it does demonstrate, that the more powerful the fans, the more dust will accumulate, and at a rate that old computers would never do in a lifetime.  A really good lesson, but it doesn't prove that your computer hygeine was intentionally bad, but just how quickly modern air cooling can do that.

:o

Actually (other) Ian ... that isn't really the innards of my computer ... actually I doubt that one would run FSX ... and if it did, perhaps not for long.

After bones' pics mine would be very mundane ... albeit with very little dust.  :-X

Bonjour Tenblade,

How to improve my setup? ...... well eventually a second set of controls for the co-pilot, and a monitor for the over head panel! But Track IR 5 ... (?!?) ... cant see the point in a cockpit of about realistic size ... why not just look left or right ... and my co-pilot would go mad each time I moved my head fitted with that infernal contraption!!!

I attach the cockpit (for two pilots) in its version for the default MOONEY BRAVO

Dear BrassEm,

Why should I want expensive plasma screens behind my cockpit panels when cheaper 17 inch flat monitors do the job?!?

Bonjour, David.

You can definitely run three monitors off one pc if you can accept sliders not being all maxed, I´m doing it (still on socket 775 system for another month or so, and I can´t accept current slider positions  ::)).

But with all the other monitors for instrument setup, I´d definitely go for a multi-pc setup like you. And, yes, if you have a co-pilot TIR would be annoying. But, I really like looking around left and right, and especially since I have to look at VC instruments, it´s kind of vital, especially for helicopter flying.

Bonjour tenblade,

I see your point over looking right and left (especially with helicopters, which I don't fly), as my present triple screen (wideview) gives only about 120 degrees forward view ... pretty immersive never-the-less! And usefull with 2 pilots as we can both get a good general view (always fun to fly with someone, no?) Of course if I win the lottery I can always expand the setup with 2 more computers to give a real 180 deg (or more) view!!

Obviously I don't use either the MS virtual cockpit or outside views, just the panel and the outside view ... by using multiple computers to share the work I can keep the sliders well to the right ... and enjoy all that orbx scenery ...... !!!

Stephen:  is the 40in LCD a conventional TV.  If so what resolution do you get?  and is it , as we are warned, not as visually good as a monitor?

Posted Image

Hi Ian,

Yes, it is a TV and it is a great FSX display screen at 1920x1080 resolution! According to all the sources I knew of and could find, a 32 inch 1080i LCD TV with a 60 fps refresh rate is perfect for a computer monitor in every respect, so I reasoned that this could possibly hold true for a stretch to 37 inches, if the quality was good. So I went shopping for a good affordable 37 inch that I could take home and try out. At the shop I compared different sized screens for resolutions and found that a 40 inch TV looked every bit as sharp and fine as a 37 inch beside it. Anything larger looked like they would not work as well, so 40 inches it was.

It was the right decision because it renders FSX beautifully without shimmering or any other graphic or performance problems. It also works well for letters and documents, although to use it full screen for white pages will burn your eyes out, do I put work in a much smaller window in front of a darker type of wallpaper. It looks a lot bigger sitting at my desk than it does in this picture. It is huge, but not too big or bright to work and play with. When it comes right down to it I don't see much if any difference quality wise between the 1680x 1050 I was running in a 24 inch monitor and the 1920x1080 I am running now in a glorious 40 inch vista.

Kind regards,

I will concure with using a tv as a monitor. I would highly recommend using 1080p resolution to get close to monitor resolution.  My was very bright too. I found that an easy solution was to use the "movie" setting for the display.  And even tho mine is a little 32" lcd, it feels big sitting 2 feet in front of it!  ;D

Thank you Wckbones for that. I meant to say 1080P, not 1080i. My new monitor is 1080P while my 3 year old Television is a 1080i 37 inch. Your 32 inches at 2 feet is huge, just like 40 inches is at 3 feet!

Nice! What case is that?

I had to test my 32" TV for simming, after looking at stephen's photos  ;D Might, work, if i could get yoke and screen closer to me, to create immersion. Like in the pic, it really doesn't create as good immersion as my 24" screen does at my computer.

17" does the job and is cost effective. Just got me thinking about full wrap around external vision since you got the flight deck worked out. Winning lotto is the next challenge.

Bonjour BrassEm,

When you go for a wraparound don't forget to use the latest WideView software by that great Italian gent Luciano Napolitano (see his website on ... http://www.wideview.it ...) He offers amazing after sales technical support too! You can always start with just 2 computers (server=panel plus slave=full forward out of window view) ... even that is a tremendous difference to your flights ... and you will very soon want to go for true "wideview" or even "surround view" !!!
