Frame Generation discussions

Recommended Posts

Hi Folks,

Just in case anyone has missed the discussion around Frame Generation for practically all modern GFX cards.

For the uninitiated there's a utility available from Steam that performs this function making for pretty smooth vsync'd simming by literally trippling your frame rate.

Yes ... sounds like snake oil ... that said this particular snake oil does do what it says it will do and out of all the various software based frame rate improvements over the years, this one is literally like a new GPU.

Whilst  it's not all peaches and cream it's very close.

It's always the same. The placebo effect makes everyone ooh and aaah but it's only making it look like fps has gone up, in reality it's still the same CPU bound coding and apparent fps gains are just copied inserted frames. But what would I know I've only been seeing this for over 30 years now.

The placebo effect

In fact, there are a couple of ways to multiply the apparent frame rate that do exactly what it says on the tin.
I have tried one and discarded it because of the artifacts, though it does indeed double the frame rate.
The fact that it does this by inserting frames between frames  does not mean that it is some kind of trick that does nothing.
In fact the only way to increase the frames per second rate is indeed to insert more frames into each second.

Looking at the reviews of both, no one suggests that they do not work, only that there are unwanted
artifacts in some cases.

I understand both "snake oil" and the "placebo effect" to be perceptions that something works when in fact it does nothing.
In this case the previous mod and this app seem to do exactly what they promise but with drawbacks that
are acceptable, or not, to those who choose to use them.
