It lies at the centre of the Balkans. Kosovo unilaterally declared its independence from Serbia in 2008 and has since gained diplomatic recognition as a sovereign state by 100 member states of the United Nations. I was deployed there for a year there on a UN Peacekeeping mission in the late 90's, and the country was in a rough shape then. The people seemed very hardy though, and I feel like they would be able to rebuild their country well as the years moved forward. I can remember reading about the Balkans war in the 92-95 period and then the Kosovo war after that. There is so much history in that whole area which contributed to the conflicts. The terrain down in that region is awesome and beautiful. One of the most scenic drives I have ever done was driving south, down the coast of Croatia.
