The Long Way Round: The Plane that Accidentally Circumnavigated the World

Recommended Posts

Capt Ford's heroic flight of the Clipper from the South Pacific at the outbreak of WW2 was one of the great achievements of the dark days at the beginning of the War. This is a new episode of this great story. Thanks, Buffy, for finding and sharing it.

For those interested in the Boeing Clippers, Ken Follett wrote a captivating novel which is set on one of these planes at the beginning of WWII.  The book is "Night Over Water," and gives a bit of an idea of what it was like to fly on one of these .

Two months ago I ordered the book ( https://www.amazon.com/Long-Way-Home-Ed-Dover/dp/061521472X ) and read it recently.

I can highly recommend this book. Very interesting adventure and It contains many original Pan AM photos.

Unbelievable these 'Flying Boats' that's what they were called, not Airplanes. With their cruising speed of 150 knots the B314 was very slow.

A full-scale model is on display at the Foynes Flying Boat Museum at Foynes, Ireland ( www.flyingboatmuseum.com )

Cheers Fred
