Thanks Landon.
Ski Season here is almost "cancelled" at the moment. With wind chill -40 ish. But you're right. It's a wonderful sport and really is something
to look forward to in the winter season.
Personally I just like going out for walks when I can. At my age I worry about falling, so I have good winter boots
with carbide ice grippers and that works really well for me.

Hi
This is a very difficult question to ask in terms of "best" , so I am answering it based upon my own experiences
in terms of satisfactory performance without any artifacts.
I honestly can't say that I have ever noticed that a driver gives greater frames, usually at best some drivers do give a smoother
performance than others .
The following are what I have used in the last year. I can only comment on their use in XPlane 11.5 and MS2020. I do not have P3D
I have a RTX 2060 super 8GB and my monitor is 2560x1440p.
Nvidia
465.89
471.11
496.76 This is what I currently have installed
I have seen no difference in fps with any of them, nor any actual other performance issues good or bad.
I'm not one for updating every time a new driver comes out, but I also don't subscribe to the theory of keeping it forever. So I tend to keep mine reasonably current , if for no other reason that driver security issues can be an area of concern.
Also , I do other things on my machine , some of which are very graphical intensive. When that software is updated to the latest version, it also comes with a recommended driver for both Nvidia and Amd. So in the above list that was why I upgraded from Nvidia 471.11 to 496.76 .
I hope this is of some help to you.

Yes !! . I'm off somewhere warm ....And almost instantly (it's my dream , right) here we are at YBBN Brisbane International
My flight goes on a bit later today, so lets just nip into the city for some breakfast

Too bad about the weather and I really should be getting back. But its 24C so, no complaints here!

Works great ...!And I won't bore you with getting through Brisbane and on to the right flight.

Just gorgeous ...
And this looks just fine and will do for supper , I'm sure
Definitely not a bad spot to be
and palm trees no less .... what a dream
And there's my hotel for the night. I've stayed in Ibis all over Europe and their good, comfortable
and great food and service.I'll just have a quick look around while I'm here. Hey, that's my plane I think.
But it looks like they're doing something to it.Ah yes, typical armchair piloting . Parked in the wrong spot --- again!
I guess the "H" didn't stand for "here"I think I will stay here forever, or at least until spring back home
But then, I had the weirdest experience. Some "monster" aircraft outside this little
wooden hanger trying to get in, but it was too big and some guy named "Tim" shouting at the top of his lungs about a missing pony at KCBEScary stuff
And then I woke up .... and it was still cold and snowy , rats!

Hello all,
Returning to flight simming after a bit of a hiatus. My 2013 vintage Win 7 desktop PC (which lost its OC) needs to be replaced with something more capable of running MFS 2020. My current box will continue to run FSX on a 26" non Hi-Def monitor on my second rig whose 2010 Win 7 desktop is dying a slow death of blue screens after an hour of use.
I plan on going as state of the art as I can within my budget with the new build. I am using Win 11 on my new (this month, replaced a 2007 one) laptop and hoping to go with it in the new build, and I like it. (Never went to Win 10, didn't care for all the clutter on the desktop, Win 11 is clean).
I've been using a 40" Sony Bravia HI-Def LCD at 1920 x 1080 with FSX since 2013. So it sounds like I need to get a 4K monitor or turn off HDR10 in Windows and the game, and give up some eye candy as a result.
(Steep re-learning curve after 2+ years away from my mostly daily FS habit that started back in 1998)
Thanks for any input
Frank
EDIT: just come across your post of Oct 25, if those are on a 1920 x 1080 screen they look very good to me!
Hi Frank
Welcome back and Happy New Year!
Yes, these screenshots were on my old monitor which was 1920x1080.
I have since upgraded my displays to 2560x1440p which for me and my GPU (RTX2060 super) works really well at that resolution. 4K can be quite a load on your system unless you have a top end gpu whereas I found for my system, 1440p is a "sweet spot" in terms of visual fidelity and performance.
Both monitors are designed for color accuracy (I have other hobby interests) and are not gaming monitors (the response time on my Christmas gift to myself is 13 ms). So they are quite slow compared with the standard that folks would use for gaming. Since I keep my fps in MS2020 locked at at 30 fps, this is not an issue for me. However, I fully appreciate that other members would not be happy with this fps and so of course everyone will have different criteria in terms of performance.
Since I don't use 4K I can't comment on that aspect in terms of advice vis a vis hardware/performance etc.
I have copied this reply to two Orbx colleagues CraigEagleFire @craigeaglefire and Andy1252 @andy1252 who have recent experience with upgrading their monitor/TV as monitor to 4K HDR10. Perhaps if they see this note, they can also comment on their positive experiences as they both are extremely pleased with HDR10 on their systems and are getting outstanding visual fidelity.
Cheers

Pete - G'day - I apologise if my remark appear to be snide - it was a joke that obviously bottomed
I suppose - to me anyway - flight simming appears to have evolved into 3 segments - the actual flight -
somewhere accurately to take off and land - that contains accurate dimensionally accurate surroundings and equipment -
and now - due to 360 effects introduced by the show camera in MSFS - airport interiors that now is suggested
to be - populated and "Mobile"
I agree with just about everything you said in reply - and it is obvious - to me anyway - that we both
think about what might be quoted as "Outside the Box!" - as past contributions on here have shown - especially resolution
The only difference I have - is that in this case the Box might just be Flight Simulation - and what the OP - and you -
discussed - is outside it.
As regards the subject matter being "State of The Art" - this very subject of movements away from the 2 D World into 3D
has been part of my hobby life for the past 25 years -when HD became available in video cameras by Sony and Panasonic
(I still have mine) These enabled me to take single frames and splice them together to create a panorama that was 360 degrees
then used this panorama to create a visual 3 D effect of movement within within the fixed centre - which evolved into walk arounds
almost identical to the subject matter
In the middle 90s I created my first walkaround a house which subsequently led to a money making hobby from Real Estate offices
in addition to creating Panoramic pictures of many places - whilst at the same time as creating many DVD from old 8mm family films
and moving into wide body printing to produce -and sell - the panoramas
I give you this information - Pete - to show that we are some 95 % on the same page - and the picture - taken around 2000 shows
clearly all of the above in my garage "studio"
To add to the above since 2006 I have I have produced some 400 Digital Art paintings - printing many - as well as some 100 paintings
in Acrylics
Pete ---- we are on the same page - which has developed from a simple flight experience in 2 D - for wannabe pilots
to be now an almost Flight Simulating Experience - to include the passenger
Hi John
Thank you so much for the clarification!
Sometimes a "tongue in cheek" comment doesn't translate well in a forum - even when it was meant with the best of intentions.
And indeed Sir, we are very much on the same page. I do agree with you that the OP and myself are commenting beyond the classic sim genre.
However that was the rational behind my thought process regarding a separate application that would act as an adjunct product to allow
customization as incorporating this as a permanent feature might not be to everyone's taste.
As you so clearly have indicated, imagination and creativity exist with us all and how/when we might like to enhance the sim experience
as I have described is very much an individual decision. For me, MS2020 is a platform that can evolve beyond what we have seen historically in
all previous products.
It requires imagination and creativity to see where it might lead - I think we have a very bright and interesting future ahead of us.
And that above all else is the reason for my suggestions. Without constructive and respectful dialogue I believe we will miss potential
opportunities - perhaps even very "offbeat ideas" can lead to something of great value. As a society we are capable of contributing in
many unique and individual ways.
New ideas are very fragile . They can be "killed off" very easily , but they can also through collective dialogue be grown and nurtured into concepts
that developers can embrace and work with
BTW - your "garage" is not a home hobbyist activity. My goodness , you were into digital art big time !!!
I remember you commenting to me previously about your investigations into 3D, but I had no idea how far you had taken the idea at the time.
Cheers John and thank you so much for taking the time to respond in such an informed and thoughtful fashion
All the best

__and here's me - thinking -are we talking about a FLIGHT simulator ??
Hi John
For me personally, it is all about enhancing the flight simulation experience .
Very much as you have described in two of your recent posts.
Of course , everyone's perspective is different which is wonderful, however when
I look at Ms2020 I view it not what it is today, but what it has the potential to become.
We all are creative and it seemed to me that this is an opportunity to suggest a unique perspective
for our good friends at Orbx, much as Aerosoft is demonstrating with the Brussels Beta that would allow them
to enhance their products.
In other words, airports are not just where the aircraft are but can also become unique , creative
and immersive destinations as part of the overall MS2020 experience.
One could look at it as not about the state of the art as it exists today, but rather all about the art of the possible
And of course if this is not one's particular "Cup of tea" there are other alternative products where the emphasis is
very much on the aircraft, the characteristics of the handling and the actual flying experience, rather than the total
perspective as I was describing.
We are truly fortunate to have such a variety of choice available to us depending on what our interests are.
So from my personal perspective, my answer to an alternative question is what does this have to do
with flight simulation is Everything
Cheers & best wishes for a Happy and Prosperous 2022

Is there a way that we can have a switch to turn people on and people off around the airport buildings that are placed by Orbx Developers, especially those that are supposed to be traffic spotters and just hanging out at the airport? I ask because when you fly at various times of the day, say, around dawn for example, in rainy/foggy/snowy or inclemment weather, I seriously doubt they would still be around at that time, say Pre- 8am or so. Its highly unrealistic, and it does ruin screen shots when departing at those time frames. Thanks for considering this in advance in the future and hope it is doable with MSFS,
cc @BradB
Hi J^3
Maybe just to expand upon your idea in a slightly different way:
1) Perhaps Orbx could consider constructing a small application that along with a proprietary Orbx "People library"
would allow a user to customize any Orbx airport with people/staff both on the tarmac and also inside airport buildings etc.
This would of course require concurrence of that actual developer, but if they were on board, they perhaps could
define appropriate libraries etc. that would be appropriate for the particular airport location and country/region.
2) It could both be fun and allow users of Orbx products to build and enhance airport products in a unique and individual
way if they so desired.
3) In an "ideal world" the app would be able to populate at different levels depending upon time of day (user selectable)
as well as time of year (again user selectable) and possibly be tied into live weather i.e. weather delays
would cause larger crowds etc.
4) I'm thinking that the app would be somewhat automated (maybe an elementary AI product) to simplify user required input.
In other words, you might specify a region (say mouse selectable) and time and season, % of say business travelers, families ,
airport/airline staff etc. within the selected area and the app would then build a automated but unique population on that basis.
To keep things interesting, the next time you decided to run the application it would randomly change .
This would ensure a uniqueness to each run of the application.
5) And to push the envelope a little further, as MS2020 evolves and matures, the populations could become dynamic rather
than simply static avatars.
Anyhow , just a thought for something a little different building on your thoughts and wondering what others
may think of the idea.
I guess I view MS2020 not as what we can do today within the constraints of the past, but what we would like to do
in the future. In other words, not to ask why, but rather why not?
Cheers & all the best to both of you for 2022.

MS Updates - the dreaded file "looping" problem
in Microsoft Flight Simulator Support Forum
Posted · Edited by renault
If you have never experienced this issue, fantastic, read no further.
If you have and have found a solution that works all the time for you, then ditto the same.
If you have tried every suggestion, fix and concoction under the sun to no avail you might find
the following of interest.
Until 3 updates ago I was in the last quandary. Endless correspondence with the Zendesk, until I was just
resigned to expecting that every MS2020 update will involve redownloading up to approximately 60 GB of data ,
regardless of the actual size of the update. Trust me, I had tried everything at that point and nothing helped.
Oddly enough it was due to a problem (the same problem as with MS2020) with an income tax
program install that lead to a root cause analysis and solution.
The problem:
Spoiler alert- I have the Steam version of MS2020, which is how I was able to watch the process in detail.
The install proceeds quite normally until one of the "large" files in MS2020 needs
to be updated. This often happens when you are about 97% complete it seems which
only adds to the frustration when it fails.
The update , in this case what MS/Asobo calls a patch file(s) downloads
but as soon as it has finished decompressing the file(s), the downloader jumps back to the beginning
of the download and keeps repeating the process.
On many different forums I found the suggestion to delete the offending patch file, but
then invariably the MS installer would try to reinstall the original large file which was GB in size.
There are "thoughts" on many forums as to why the MS installer can't work properly.
What I discovered was that this behavior has absolutely nothing to do with MS2020 but is a manifestation
of a program that many have on their machine which is actually behaving in the way it was designed to work.
I have verified this behavior both with Malwarebytes support (in my particular case) and the Zendesk.
In fact, buried in the Zendesk help is a list of programs that they suggest may cause issues
with an update , although they don't explain the specific issue(s) in detail.
Scroll down to "Check your Antivirus or Anti-Malware/Anti Ransomware" for a list of known applications
All versions - Packages installation & decompressing issues - Basic troubleshooting – Microsoft Flight Simulator Support (zendesk.com)
In my case Malwarebytes has both Exploit Protection and Ransomware Protection to protect
your machine from possible "bad actors".
The way the algorithms work (a simplistic explanation) is that when they see a downloaded
file trying to attach itself to an existing file, they immediately activate and delete the downloaded file.
What I have just described is in "MS2020 speak", the downloaded patch file(s) trying to
attach itself to the large base file exactly as Asobo intended it to work.
However, as soon as Malwarebytes sees this happening, it deletes the patch file, the MS2020
downloader then says "no file" and starts the download again and the process just keeps repeating itself.
The solution is very simple. During a MS2020 update, in my particular case, temporarily turn Malwarebytes
completely off until the update is finished. Then turn MWB back on again.
As I said , in my case this was both the cause of the looping issue and the solution.
I have downloaded 3 complete updates (6,7 and the most recent one of Jan 6th) averaging about 100MB/sec
without any issues whatsoever once I discovered what was happening in my particular case.
In fact with update 6, just to check, I turned MWB back on during the process and it began looping on files it was working with in the
pc-fs-base-bigfiles folder.
As soon as the patch file was decompressed, I was watching the process in the folder) the patch deleted and the
download restarted. I then deactivated MWB and it properly finished the update with the patch files i.e. the patch files
all decompressed in sequence and then were added to the main big file and it was on to the next stage of the download.
This may not be relevant to your particular installation, but if you are plagued by this problem, have checked every other
suggestion and are using an independent Malware program then I sincerely hope that this info may be of help to you as it can
be extremely frustrating.
Cheers
Pete
