Northern California

I had been mindlessly browsing the forums while I reinstall FSX, and I saw this quote about Northern California:

Back on topic .... >:(

Yes, we do plan on covering the entire continental USA, and as you can see we are working our way down the west coast.

Release schedule:

CRM Central Rockies - June

NCA Northern California - Christmas

SRM Southern Rockies - 2012

SCA Southern California - 2012

Those releases should cover about 30% of the USA. We are also investigating a "USA Base Pack" to cover the whole of the USA with FTX but not in the same detail as the specific regions. I will post separately about that.

My question is, naturally, is this still an accurate projection of how things are to unfold, it would be very cool to explore Northern California by Christmas.

We must be talking decades to reach the East coast. In the East we may not have mountain peaks but we sure do have interesting scenery. Take a flight from BWI Annapolis up the Chesapeake Bay, over PHL Philadelphia, past LGA LaGuardia and JFK Kennedy, out the sound between Connecticut and Long Island, over BID Block Island, over MVY the Vineyard and land on ACK Nantucket with Boston and New England to the North. What a great ride for a $100. hamburger, in all kinds of weather.

Don't assume our eastward progress will be contiguous, if you know what I mean.

Indeed! NatureFlow will undoubtedly find a home in the East! The Midwest such as Wisconsin is interesting too

Wow, I won't assume anything, meanwhile I really enjoy slow and low in the Pacific Northwest.

I do fly the east coast sim as prep for $100 hamburger flights.

How about starting the East Coast from the opposite end of the country from PNW?... ;)

Florida!

I would love to see what the Orbx crew could do with the Key West, Marathon Key, Ft Jefferson and the rest of the Florida Keys, tropical waters, South Beach, Downtown Miami, Port of Miami, KMIA, Orlando and the many theme parks, etc...

edited to add a few more sceneries... :)

Wherever is a coming soon region(s), one thing I have learned is that I also learn more about that region thanks to Orbx. I'm from Florida and live in New England so would greatly like to see those areas as they both offer their own cool stuff different from any other region prior done in FTX.

But at the same time I keep hearing a lot about the great lakes area and my all time favorite would be the Southwest US with all the great national parks and southwest colors that make them up. Of course Southern Central Alaska certainly does have a great ring to it as well!

Yeah, I'm looking forward to all of this from them, but I would also like to see them at least cover the same Alaskan Regions that Richard Goldstein covered. I miss flying those regions and I can only imagine how great they would be by Orbx. Oh, and then you guys could continue down through the Aleutians, and....

I think you guys need more hours in the day. ;)

Let's not forget there are some really great VFR bush flying areas north of the 49th as well. The Yukon Territories east through the Mackenzie Mountains and the Northwest Territories and Nunavut are home to the origins of bushflying in Canada. Ontario and Quebec are also majestic flying with many small airports and lakes and rivers galore to explore in rugged Canadian Shield topography. As a wilderness canoe tripping guide I can attest that all of these regions draw people from all over North America and Europe to them to spend their holidays basking in the beauty and freedom. They remain very active bush flying, and larger sched flight areas today. I look forward to FTX covering these regions. I am confident that flight simmers would enjoy them equally as much as those areas of the west coast already completed.

Wherever and whatever ORBX covers is a welcome addition to my library of possible simming hours. Keep up the great work and know how much we appreciate it!

Hi kamarad,

I have a list from Holger of airports (almost 500) in an area called New England, Maritimes (NEM) which includes the three states you mentioned above. Time frame not determined but it's on the radar.

Cheers, Neil

Wow, interesting, that is my flying zone as most of those states and what we call the maritimes provinces of Canada (Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edouard Island and Newfounland) are well within reach of my home base Quebec (CYQB).

I will follow-up closely for development and announcement....

Saying the Maritimes gives me goosebumps. I am from Newfoundland and if Orbx is planning to do something over this way would be amazing.

Here Here Alexander!

I too live in South Florida and have been based in Miami for 20 years as a pilot for a regional airline. Florida, the Keys and Bahamas offer some spectacular flying opportunities and would give the ORBX team the opportunity to do the region and then focus on specific airports, as the have done in PNW. I would love to see them start from our corner of the country and work from the NW and SE corners and meet in the middle. At the rate they are going, we MIGHT see NA SEUS (Southeastern US) by.....2020?!!!

Totally agree with that. We need some diversification. Peolpe might lose interest, if the focus stays too long on one geographic region only. We need some contrasts like in the Australian sceneries.

Thumbs up for 8) Everglades with Crocodile Flow 8)

I grew up in Largo, FL which is right next to KPIE airport. Now I live in Orlando, and used to take private pilot lessons at KORL, "Executive" airport in downtown Orlando. Asking an airport office to allow you to walk around and take pictures in this day and age is going to get you some suspicious looks for sure and probably shown a hasty exit to the door unfortunately. I used to be able to park my car under the KMCO approaches and pull out my scanner to listen to ATC as they vectored the approaches and departures, tower, etc. Now doing that could land you in some uncomfortable places I bet. Still, there are smaller airports in the Orlando area that might not be so paranoid. Kissimmee, Sanford, Orlando Country, etc. Shoot, I'd head on down to the Florida Key's to take some photo's of Marathon, Key West for you if that might help out when/if you get to Florida. PM me if you're interested.

You might be surprised how much access you can get, even these days. I have only been turned down twice in all the years I've been photographing airports for FS - in both cases because the proper person of authority couldn't be located in order to secure permission. In most cases, all that's required is having someone at the airport be an FS fan, and you're in. In a few cases, that wasn't even necessary for me; the staff of Stark's Twin Oaks had no idea about the sim or add-on scenery, but as soon as I told them what I was up to, they were happy to let me roam all over the place with my camera.

Of course, you could say that's because they're a small, family-run airport. However, I had a contact at KPDX last year who had that magic combination of a love of simulation and an air-side access pass. He took me all around the airport, letting me photograph in places that you'd never be able to go without an escort. Unfortunately, those pics aren't likely to result in a project anytime soon, but it's a great example of how making connections with the the right people can make all the difference.

For anyone considering trying to photograph an airport, I say don't let the rules and regs frighten you off. Try to find out who's really in charge at the airport, and see if you can explain what you're trying to do. Often times, you'd be surprised at how enthusiastic they are.

I would add Flight Safety's Vero Beach (KVRB), Embry Riddles Daytona (KDAB) and the rate #1 flyin community Spruce Creek (7FL6) to the list. Chance of added sales for students and well the creek is just an amazing fly in community.

Well let's try further north. Maine, new hamshire, vermont ?

By elimination we will narrow down the possibilities ....

The winter sees us flying into New England for a weekend of Skiing, with very weather related flights, I remember an especially difficulty fly in to Burlington Vermont in a snow storm, over the lake with no visibility, with elevation all around and a narrow approach to the runway. The skiing at Stowe was great and the flight home much easier than the flight up the Hudson River Valley.

@Brad - I was able to take ramp side photographs of my local regional airport this summer. After a few e-mails back and forth to the airport manager explaining what I was looking to do, he drove me around te airport to all the buildings and hangers to take pictures. The only catch was I was only given about 15 minutes to take them due to construction and other time constraints but i got off about 85 pictures, some good, some not so good, but I may be able to get access one more time to replace those.

  • 2 weeks later...

As an avid FTX fan, I would be willing to take pictures for you guys at the airports I have access to. I have taken a lot of pictures at my local airport, KBCT (Boca Raton, FL). KBCT features Florida Atlantic University with their beautiful new football (AMERICAN football! ;-) ) stadium and the amazing Muvico Palace 20 theater, both adjacent to the airport property. I work out of KMIA (Miami Int'l) and could probably also get access to KFLL (Ft Lauderdale) , KOPF (Opa Locka), KFXE (Ft Lauderdale Exec), KHWO (North Perry), KPMP (Pompano Beach), K??? (Lantana) and KPBI (Palm Beach Int'l). The station manager for my airline in KEYW (Key West) is a friend of mine and could probably work out full access at that airport.
