Matthew Kane
That is too bad. Seeing the images of it on the field makes you think how tough that plane really is. It was common for those types of crashes when that aircraft was in service and limping back with damage from Germany....This one saved it's occupance before it burned. Amazing aircraft the B17 Cheers
Rob Newman
Damn! I've seen this old bird in person more than once... Even had some pictures of it. Tragic when pieces of history end up like this...
Martin Henare
If you go to their website they explain what happened. The made a forced landing after noticing a smell then fire on the left wing. They landed safely wheels down with no damage to the aircraft and no injuries. The reason it got destroyed was because the fire trucks couldn't get onto the farmers field as it was too soft. So the small fire eventually overtook and gutted it. Apparently it was so slow they had time to get all their bags off. If the fire engines had been able to get closer it probably would have had pretty minor damage.
alan2
Heartbreaking stuff. I feel its important to keep in touch with our history . It puts Today into perspective. How many flying B17's left, anybody know ?

CathyH
It is sad to see the old girl go, but consider this. She survived where most of her sisters were melted down to become Airstreams. She taught a new generation the meaning of World War 2 and what it was like to fly these birds. And at the last, she did what B17's have always done, she bought her boys home safe one last time, fighting till the end. Her spirit resides now in Vallholl

Ron Attwood
Old enough to captain a B17, but not old enough to drive the family car. I wonder if they still make 'em like that.
