Orbx/MS Collaboration

Recommended Posts

Watching the MSFS presentation at FSExpo yesterday, I was extremely happy to see that Orbx and PuffinFlight are partnering up with MS to add obstructions throughout the World.  It was mentioned, that there would be a library of obstructions.  My question is, considering that Orbx has created MANY custom obstruction towers/lighthouses/smokestacks/etc. in it’s various old projects, would there be any chance that some of these could be given PBR textures and incorporated into MSFS 2024 for the collaboration project?  The numerous television/radio towers in the old Orbx FSX/P3D regions come to mind.

Hi Rob, thanks for the kind words. It's certainly an interesting -- and challenging -- project for the team.

Including already existing models is a good idea in principle. However, each custom model would add unique geometry and texture files to the overall project, quickly increasing its package size. For example, the 100 or so POI models we created for each of the MFS World Updates we contributed to, added several GB to their packages.

Given that the Vertical Obstructions project covers the globe, with at least 500,000 objects, we're pretty much forced to use a limited library of models, sort of like a LEGO set, to build the antennas, masts, chimneys, and other structures.

Cheers, Holger
