Certainly the surrounding terrain mesh is very different with the South Island scenery disabled and the airport scenery is arguably ruined by this. Try re-installing the airport and see if you can post a wider angle shot that includes the whole airport and its surroundings. It does sit on a large area of photo real scenery but until you get rid of the cliffs, you won't see it at its best. At the moment, I cannot replicate your screen shot.
