  1. Very sad indeed to hear this not unexpected news :( Terry and I were online friends for many years going back through OZx,  VOZ, a few other Australian forums long gone, and even the days of BBS.  We both had a background in aviation and worked for some time in the Northern Territory - he in the center, me in the north - so we exchanged NT liverys and photographs for a while until neither of us could "paint" anymore.  A very generous and friendly man I was sorry to lose contact with him a few years back when I was seriously ill and when I recovered he was seriously ill as we all know.  VALE mate and commiserations to his family and friends.

  2. Jacksons Airport Port Moresby PNG - lived in TPNG 1950-75 and Port Moresby was (and is) the capital through which most domestic and international commercial flights operate are hubbed.  I also did all my instrument ratings, twin ratings and some type endorsements in Port Moresby.  For the last 4 years of my PNG time I was involved in district administration of the Central District which included  rural airstrip construction and maintenance  between the Goilala (Tapini etc.) area to the west and the the Milne Bay District to the east and all the Kokoda Trail airstrips to Kagi/ Myola Lakes to the north (Kokoda was in the Northern District).

I would not like to hazard a guess how many times I went in or out of Jacksons - the excellent Orbx FSX version gets hammered every time I get a new aircraft or one I haven't flown for a while because I don't have to consult the charts for anything really and visually all the landmarks are spot on in the scenery :D

  3. My first CFI, from whom I received in Rabaul TPNG 1956-58 my first solo, Restricted and Open PPL, piloted Cats for the RAAF during WWII from bases in Northern Australia, Papua, New Guinea, Dutch New Guinea and Borneo as the war progressed Northwards towards Japan.  Most of his missions were at night in the black livery either laying mines or doing clandestine supply runs or personnel deliveries/pickups for coastwatchers and other behind the lines operatives.  Only told stories about it on ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day - riveting stuff.

The QANTAS Catalinas ran services throughout coastal and island areas of Papua New Guinea and right down the Solomons chain as far as Honiara right up until the early 1970s after being taken over by TAA Sunbird Services.  Very sparsely equipped and very noisy but the water takeoffs and landings were amazing as were the very remote islands to be visited and it was such a kick to land in harbours/bays near regional airports where we often traveled in non-amphibious aircraft.

I also had the experience of long hot low level flights in those Catalinas over a two week period in the early 1960s searching for the never found Michael Rockefeller - I was in a blister with high powered tripod mounted Naval binoculars, copious sunburn cream, ear protectors and large eskies of bottled water. We got paid very well in $US by the Rockefeller family.

Amazing aircraft that I truly missed when they disappeared from TPNG haven't seen one since.

  4. Paul I'm 81 next month and I didn't even progress to P3D for all the reasons you mention - the slowing of the mind and body as I age (this differs individually) means my time has to be priority rationed and I have therefore remained a FSX dinosaur quite happily.  So if your individuality and health allow you to remain at the "sharp edge" go for it!

  5. Used to breed them about 45 years ago and the chewers need more attention in the form of bonding, games, exercise and discipline - usually best as one person and one household dogs they also make great hunting or gun dogs.

You are right age 3 is when they should be behaving well so you need to demand that from him - perhaps a short stint with a professional trainer may assist.
