Canterbury image voted top in online poll

An image of Canterbury's Rakaia River has been voted the top satellite image of 2011 in an online poll.

The satellite photo of the river, taken by digital image provider Digital Globe in March of last year, shows the river's vivid blue ribbons cutting through the plains towards the Pacific Ocean.

The image beat out 20 other satellite images in a Facebook poll run by Digital Globe, including ones of New York's Ground Zero, Dubai's Palm Island, Japan's tsunami damaged Fukushima Daiichi power plant, and Muammar Gaddafi's Libyan compound.

The river is one of the braided rivers in New Zealand, and a mean flow of 203 cubic metres per second and a mean annual seven-day low flow of 87 cubic metres per second.

Flowing from the Southern Alps, the river flows east around 150 kilometres before reaching the coast 50km south of Christchurch.
