The Mighty Eighth

I intend to make a video with approx 500 aircraft in the air to portray the Mighty Eighth Airforce. All the ground sequences will be probably be Tamworth, Bundaberg and Camden from Aussiex as they have some old WW2 Hangars.

Here is a preview. This is Tamworth. I had to make sure that the VB sign and Qantas doors did not show. I turned some fog on to make it look like a typical English morning.

Love the 17s taking off one by one. Now that in a grainy black and white look or washed out colours would look really period. Looking forward to seeing the next instalments! Beautiful and the music of course fits like a glove.

I have been wondering how to go about the Europen ground textures in the video and I remembered flying out of ORBX Bundaberg and I think that will do nicely. Australia is such a diverse country and I should be able to do the video from home :D

Does anybody know of an FTX or Aussiex wide grass runway and a bitumen runway without line markings? I remember the second from somewhere??

This is just out of Bundy.

This looks like a looooong project. It took a few hours just for this scene around Bundy.

Best in HD with some sound.

I purchased YPMQ today (an automatic purchase) and have not even enjoyed it yet!

I have received permission to use Glenn Miller's music in the video. For those that don't know, Glenn Miller and his Orchestra joined the Air Force and he and his iorchestra were in England entertaining the troops during WW2. Glenn flew in poor weather to Europe ahead of the orchestra after D Day to prepare for concerts in France and the light plane he was travelling in dissapeared.

I will have to redo these clips. The first I forgot the drop tanks and the second was the first time tghat I flew the aircraft and had the mixture too rich, thus the smoke. The scenes are Cessnock. I might ad some fogso that you can't see the moutain rangge in the backround as England is preety flat in the SE.

Best in HD with some volume.

Here is pretty well a final part, Startup, taxi and takeoff. This is 3minutes long. My bomb run is 4 minutes flying thru Flak (completed), I still have to do P51, P47 & p38 takeoff, climb out, cruise, enemy intercepts, return and landing. The intro is 1minute long. SO the vid may be close to 15minutes when stitched together. The video is based on fact as much as possible. This is the 401st BG from Deenthorpe (alias YSTW) and a mission to Schweinfurt on 13th April, 1944. I am using quotes from a book, so I can't show those until I get permission. I have permission from the publisher but they need to get permission from the persons that supplied them with the crew quotes. I had to keep the camera away from the cars (although I missed one white 4WD) and the Qantas signs though.

I am a novice with sound in Sony Vegas, so please advise if something does not sound right. You should hear engines startup, engines running, music and flares.

And thankyou Jankees if you read this (I will put you in the credits) for all the great repaints that you have made available. I chose the 401st BG because of all the repaints for that group that you have done. The music is one of my favourite Glenn Miller Tunes, St Louis Blues.

I hope you enjoy.

Hi,

It's really taking shape now, do you plan to put any German fighters attacking B17, with the escorts intercepting scene's into it. :)

Cheers Phil

Yes Phil, I have already trialled the friendly fighters zig zagging over the bomber formation and formations of Luftwaffe fighters attacking the formation. I have done a B17 in a crash landing at Tamworth in the ending. It turned out great but will keep that for the full video release. It's taken weeks to get this far but I got bogged down with PC OOM, FS Recorder Render freezes and then Sony Vegas wouldn't render due to OOM. I found a way around them all finally.

Here is an early version of the last 44 secs of the bomb run whch is now 4mins in length. Whilst doing some research for the video, I read that more men wer lost from the 8th Air Force than the USMC in the whole of the Pacific War! There are a lot of aircraft falling from the sky during the bomb run to depict the horendous losses. During 1944 3,500 Heavy Bombers were lost by Flak alone!

Keep it happening Gibo, your vids are getting better. Who doesnt like the sound of those Merlins and the sight of those B17 . Waiting for the rest :)

Thankyou Alan,

I am still on track with it. A very slow process though. Here is the scene to go after the Mustangs. This is Bundy. I thought it has some suitable vintage hangars from the best airport makers in the world, ORBX.

Watch the Artificial Horizon dance with the music. Purely co-incidental.

Hi Gibo. This is an awesome project. It must take alot of time to set up those shots, and there is so many of them. Cant wait to see the finished product. I too had SONY Vegas OOM issues but could not resolve them so i switched to Powerdirector. Keep up that good work.
