Unsolicited Testimonial - Airborn Computers

I'm one of those that has been struggling along with a dinosaur P4 for at least 2 years past its use by date - pushing sliders further back with every new offering, and whilst being forever amazed at how well it ran FSX (considering), was constantly having to pause to let the scenery catchup, and sort of getting used to trying to fly at sometimes less than 10FPS.

Eventually it got to be too much, and the decision was made to chuck the P4 out the window, and go with a new super beast.

I trawled around the forums, and pretty well sorted out the specs needed and obtained a couple of quotes. I'm not into building my own machine, but have a reasonable idea of what's in that box and what it does.

I decided to contact Gavin from Airborn Computers, to bounce a few things around, and sort out whether he was able to do anything for me.

This is going too long!!!

The short and curlies of it

Gavin was able to make a few suggestions and modifications, and provided me with a quote that was very competitive on some items, and more than competitive on most. He built the machine, tuned and tweaked it with my software installed, and supplied a "butt kicking" machine ready to go.

The level of service he provided was very impressive, and his commitment to providing a great outcome is in my opinion second to none. There have been a couple of teething problems, that is inevitable with complex electronics and software, but in his words, he "moves heaven & earth" to get them sorted.

I cannot recommend Airborn Computers highly enough from my experience, which will extend for the life of the machine, because that's the service Gavin provides.

And if that's not enough, Gavin is a bloody good bloke to boot.

If you're in the market , speak to him ... you've got nothing to lose, and everything to gain.

And please note - this is a totally unsolicited testimonial - I have absolutely no connection whatsoever with Airborn Computers, apart from being one of their first customers.

We are extremely lucky in our hobby to have OrbX, OZX and Adrian working for us, and now we can add Gavin.  Their attitude and commitment to serving our needs is exceptional.

Cheers from a "happy chappy"

Hi Tom,

I am very pleased that Gavin came through for you. I've spoken to him a few times about your system and he is very proud of the work that went into it. And yes, he will pull out all stops to get any of those teething issues resolved. He definitely is a top bloke and a good friend of mine and I am very pleased to see his new business off to a good start.

On ya Gav!

P.S. Cheers for the mention there Tom, much appreciated!

From the website, seems Airborn are in WA?

I'd really like to find a reliable and knowledgeable company in Melbourne for my PC supplies and repairs. At the moment I use CMI in Bundoora but they are really too far away from my home in Blackburn or my work in Clayton to be convenient. Anyone know of a good computer company in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne?

Cheers,

Noel.

All I could find was a reference to a wharehouse location in Perth, not a retail outlet, did I miss something?  It could mean anything or nothing...

It would be great to have a computer retail outlet that had some clue as to the needs of the average flightsimmer.  Most of the ones that I go to know a lot about FPS's and other strategy and fantasy games, but bugger all about FS.

Anyhow, I look forward to any participation that Airborne may have on this board.

Cheers,

Sorry for the delay in answering Paul, I've been pretty tied up with RL, not the least a funeral.

The machine Gavin supplied uses an Antec 900 case with Asus StrikerII mobo, up there quad core(not OCed at present - may come later if necessary)-3 HDDs, 2 of which high speed raptors in Raid 0 config -state of art Asus EN9800GX2 1GB DDR3 -a hefty chunk of DDR3 mem - 850 watt PSU - all coupled to a 26" monitor.  Whilst there are better rigs around, this system gives performance I've only dreamt of for a year or two, and if you get sick of flying, which is hard to imagine, it's pretty stimulating just sitting here looking at the machine - it has a see through side panel, and sports a multitude of led illuminated fans, logos and flashing lights. Excuse me now, as I have to get back to flying !!!

Cheers

Tom,

Can I dare ask how much such a rig set you back? I am in the market for a new flight sim computer and I've been keeping an eye on the Airborn site. I'm wondering if my budget will accomodate a machine of those specs.

Cheers

Tony

Thanks John. I have looked at Scorptec's site before and even been in to their store a couple of times in the past. I got the feeling they were not interested in helping me with an upgrade, just wanted to sell me a standard box or standard parts.  But these places can change dramatically with staff turnover and I'm willing to give them another go.

Cheers,

Noel.

Good to see you on this board Gavin.

Do you have a retail outlet in Perth (I see your profile indicates that you are actually are in Perth).

Thank you for the Welcome Maxter, while i have had an eye on these boards for a while now, it’s nice to be participating.

Currently I work full time in the construction industry building remote area mine sites. There is a retail outlet in Airborn Computers future but not in the next 12 months. I can however, arrange shipment to anyware in Australia with insurance and specialised precautions for the transport of individual parts or entire PC systems.

Please don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions you might have.

Kind Regards,

Gavin Gillett

Hi Noel, I mentioned Scorptech only because your wanted something close to you. Having said that, their staff were pretty incompetent, and the machine was out of action for 10 weeks while they figured out they'd sold me a cooked 8800Ultra and a dud motherboard. Took them a total of 10+ rebuilds (at their expense, I am sure they lost money on it) to finally get a stable system. Since then it's been rock solid after I tuned the OS, but yes, some of these operators are only as good as the components they flog and their current staff, which change often I expect.

As for Gavin's PCs, I am sure you will get a pretty solid machine if it's built by a sim fanatic like Gavin is. At least he won't get Frames-Per-Second mixed up with First-Person-Shooter, LOL!

Hi Tony, and yes by all means "dare ask" what a rig like that set me back - but I think your best approach would be to trawl the forums (as I'm sure you do) and sort out your "wants". Get a few quotes both on-line and shop front, and then establish communication with Gavin (e-mail) with your budget limitations and see what he can do for you. Be warned, he will probably try to talk you up a bit, not so much for his own gain, but knowing that a few extra bucks here and there will lead to pretty significant increases in satisfaction.    There's no hard sell, and he'd be happy just helping even if no sale was to come - he's that sort of bloke.

Cheers

Hi guy’s

10+ rebuilds would definitely cost them and if I do say First Person Shooter instead of Frames Per Second, please shoot me :)

Tonyla1, drop me an email if you like mate, the best product I sell is advice and that won’t cost you a cent.
