John Lovell
Just discovered this neat app called Open Clouds. It works in conjunction with REX and sets real visibilty levels thoughout with out that annoying 'suddenly clear' syndrome. Also adds more cloud layers and high altitude clouds making it the most realistic Iv ever seen FSX for clouds and visibility.... and low stratus and fog remains consistent! Here is the link, id certainly recommend it, very easy to use http://www.fsopen.co.uk/software/openclouds/ [img width=1120 height=700]http://fsfiles.org/flightsimshots/images/5732011_2_18_11_15_19_992.jpg [img width=1120 height=700]http://fsfiles.org/flightsimshots/images/8712011_2_18_11_17_25_384.jpg [img width=1120 height=700]http://fsfiles.org/flightsimshots/images/6002011_2_18_11_17_54_104.jpg [img width=1120 height=700]http://fsfiles.org/flightsimshots/images/6432011_2_18_11_19_26_289.jpg [img width=1120 height=700]http://fsfiles.org/flightsimshots/images/9822011_2_18_11_31_41_537.jpg [img width=1120 height=700]http://fsfiles.org/flightsimshots/images/1572011_2_18_11_38_32_883.jpg [img width=1120 height=700]http://fsfiles.org/flightsimshots/images/6042011_2_18_11_46_22_821.jpg
RobdeVries
Looks nice John, Electra little bit roughly modelled but sure it's a nicve aircraft. Does Active Sky not what Open Clouds does?

John Lovell
Here are some more with FS Open clouds... This is an amazing discovery! as REX is only as better where the weather engine tells where and how much cloud must be drawn. Such an improvement! Thing I found with FSX weather engine is the lack of Cirrus.... not anymore with this... and visibilty realistic on horizon And look at how many layers of clouds there are in this one [img width=1120 height=700]http://fsfiles.org/flightsimshots/images/9012011_2_18_14_28_50_399.jpg [img width=1120 height=700]http://fsfiles.org/flightsimshots/images/4902011_2_18_14_29_6_67.jpg [img width=1120 height=700]http://fsfiles.org/flightsimshots/images/2742011_2_18_14_34_54_204.jpg

rockliffe
Hey John, that looks amazing But, and I know what you are expecting me to ask... what about framerates, surely there must be quite a hit? EDIT: Just been on their website, this looks awwesome John. I like the way the fog gradually appears... now the, does the same happen when flying through clouds? I find it extremely irritable when flying through clouds and they are disappearing and appearing almost instantaneously around the plane. But, like said, what about framerates? Believe me, no more of that suddenly appear/disappear of clouds.... you really have to try this to believe it.. when you see all those layers of clouds exactly where they should be, you will be blown away and see REX in its full glory! (Orbx has to be the prime choice of scenery though ) And the Cirrus :o I cant really show it fully with screen shots!... and no loss in frames either! rockliffe
John, I shall try it straight away and report back my findings also. If this is as good as you say it is, then the guys should make this sticky EDIT: Mmm, not having a lot of success. Downloaded the file and I cannot unzip it for some reason... John Lovell
Load it up after FSX then once you have put in your flight plan or start location, just hit 'Push to start loading weather and dont touch fsx online weather engine You're gonna love it!...also, I find it works best when you set to weather changes over time to none in FSX

Nyxx
So how do you set up weather? If I want real weather I use REX, do you have to use the fsx built in real weather. Or is this like a stand alone weather engine? Does it work with with custom weather set by user.

Or is this like a stand alone weather engine? Does it work with with custom weather set by user. You run this utility with fsx then once you have loaded your flight plan return to the open cloud interface and then "push to load weather" it will load real weather from it's own engine into fsx and update every so often. But it Is more accurate in annotating multiple cloud levels... Not just cumulus and cirrus but all in between... But you get more consistent cirrus
Nyxx
Does it have to be a flight plan or just the airport you wish to fly from. You recommend have weather set to never change over time?
John Lovell
Does it have to be a flight plan or just the airport you wish to fly from. You recommend have weather set to never change over time? Not just flight plan anywhere u load a flight up. Rex always recommend set weather changed over time to non so that's what I been using. After using open clouds, it really does open up the clouds.. If you try it, you will think you got a new rex... Really is that good!

rockliffe
Hey John, this is an awesome bit of kit! Only thing though, it is real weather generating software, right? Can it generate the same effects for user controlled weather? Am I missing something?

John Lovell
Hey John, this is an awesome bit of kit! Only thing though, it is real weather generating software, right? Can it generate the same effects for user controlled weather? Am I missing something? Thats pretty much what it does, it changes your user controlled weather with the data it recieves and updates every time.. after loading real weather from this utility, look in your user controlled weather and you can see what it has done... Simply and amazing piece of kit this is!
rockliffe
OK John, almost there... so are you saying that I can still take advantage of the look and effect of Open Cloud while still using my own weather themes, in addition to using real weather? rockliffe
Mmmm, I am a sad boy. Since installing Open Clouds, within 24 hours REX has stopped working. Not only has it stopped working but I can't get it to fire up at all! Not even after a new install :'( So, great piece of software, but it may be, (not definite) but it may be that it comes with a price...
