Scenery Ordering - I seem to not get the right loading sequence

Issue:  scenery ordering

I had a complete mess of scenery ordering after using the new OrbX Central and migrating my OrbX programs. So I reinstalled P3Dv45 and started again. That was with an OrbX Central version before Advanced Layering.

I installed all by other sceneries (MAIW, ACG and some own airports). Afterwards I installed the whole bunch of OrbX again. This again did not result in the order of sceneries I did expect.

Then thee advanced Layering option came out and I used it. That made things worse. Sudddenly I had MAIW entries on the very button of my list below everything else.

Next thing I did was reemoving all OrbX Regions, Airports, Trees, Buildings, openLC, ObjectFlow and Libraries. I left only the Base Pack were I run verify files.

Next I removeed all layer sections in all addon.xml.

I restarted P3D, and saw the expected order of things.

Next in OrbXCentral I:

  • Enabled the option "Enable Advanced Layering"
  • Selected a scenery as the insertion point for "OrbX Airports and Regions"
  • Selected "OrbX Airports and Regions" for OrbX Global openLC

Then I did install these OrbX programs:

  • OrbX Libraries
  • OrbjectFlow
  • Buildings HD
  • Trees HD

All this should be visible from the attached central.log file.

I restarted the sim to check the order of things.

Entry 1 and 2 on top of all others are two OrbX entries which I did not expect there at all: "OrbX Libraries Lookup" and "OrbX Libraries Global".

I assume that Treees and Buildings are way down the list is in order.

Question1: Is it correct to have them there

Question2: If it is not correct - is anything I have done (and described above) wrong and is causing the issue?

Question3: If I did nothing wrong - is OrbX Central doing it wrong?

I keep this thread going while adding more OrbX components and showing where they end up.

Next thing was to install:

  • openLC Europe
  • openLC North America
  • openLC South America

Again one OrbX entry at the top of the list that according to my guess should not be there.

More entries in the range where I would expect them to be from how I used the insertion point, and more sections way down the list

Next we come to Regions.

First one:

  • Norway

No unexpected entries in the Scenery order. Therefore proceed with

  • England
  • Ireland North
  • Ireland South
  • Scotland
  • Wales
  • Germany North

Here checked aggain, because download speed has just come down.

Two new entries at the top of the library: Wales and Scotland

Also the button of the library slowly gets crowded with OrbX entries. Do they belong here or not?

Let's continue.

Why is it that after about 95% the download speed is being reduced to a crawl? The time for the last 5% feel like taking longer than the other 95% before.

The speed readings in the log file prove that the reduced speed is happening every time.

While writing this, the NZ North download has stalled completely. So I will stop this exercise for today and give the last update.

  • California North
  • Pacific Northwest
  • Alaska South
  • California South

No new irregularities looking at the scenery order.

I will continue this with the rest of the regions and the few airports I have.

I have seen a similar problem with how Orbx Central has installed Orbx products.  In a nutshell, I have up to now only installed all the North American regions, then GEN, GES, Norway, and various Orbx library entries, two or three of which I haven't seen before, but are likewise present in the OP's screen shots of his scenery library.  Orbx Central has installed them all "upside down", that is, they are in reverse alphabetical order, SCA at the top and GEN at the bottom of the list, and lastly, four Orbx library entries (which should be at the top of the list).  Clearly, Orbx Central has not installed these basic items alphabetically as it is supposed to, unless, of course, it was intended to operate that way--different than FTX Central's logic, btw.

Any thoughts?  I regret having to reinstall my ORBX stuff, but it was necessary, due to "pilot error", and I thought Orbx Central was up to the job.

Here we continue with yesterdays exercise.

I installed the last three missing regions:

  • New Zealand Noth
  • New Zealand South
  • Australia v2

To allow a better analysis here the complete OrbX layering after the installation of my Global and Regional products.

This concludes my OrbX re-installation with the exception of the Global Airport Pack.

I think I have provided all information in a way that OrbX can

  • reproduce my steps
  • have the logs from OrbX Central
  • see the screenshots of the resulting scenery order

If you need anything more, please let me know.

If you want me do do/change/test anything, please let me know.

My expectation of OrbX support at this point is:

  1. Confirm I have installed my OrbX products the way I am supposed to
  2. Confirm that the 5. OrbX entries on top of the scenery list do not belong there
  3. Confirm that the order of OrbX entries below the insertion point is correct
  4. Confirm that the OrbX entries at the buttom of the list do belong there

Many thanks for your support!

Yes, it does appear correct.

To explain these:

  • Orbx Libraries Entries
    • Orbx Libraries Global doesn't follow layering rules and can be anywhere.
    • Orbx Libraries Lookup doesn't follow layering rules and can be anywhere.
  • Orbx scenery entries
    • FTX_EU_ENG_05_SCENERY Orbx EU Wales is files that would usually be replaced/merged in EU England when you install EU Wales
    • FTX_EU_ENG_05_SCENERY Orbx EU Scotland is files that would usually be replaced/merged in EU England when you install EU Scotland
    • FTXAA_ORBXLIBS Orbx Global openLC Europe is files that would usually be put into Orbx Libraries when you install openLC Europe

The three Orbx scenery entries at the top are leftover from our internal FTX Central 3 to Orbx Central migration and will be removed in the future. They should not cause any issues in the meantime.

Yes, they do. These are the elevation adjustments that were previously put in P3D\Scenery\World.

Then it seems that on fresh installation, Central does a perfect job.

I will follow up with some screen shots from places where I am not sure if this is the way it is supposed to be. Many thanks again, Mitchell!!

This is very helpful, particularly as I've encountered a similar situation in the process of wiping my PC and starting anew with the library method.  I do have a couple of questions that Martin didn't ask, though:

  • Regarding the "world" layers (those at the bottom) I'm assuming elevation/stub/global it all means the same thing and there's no inherent priority among them?
  • The "numbered" layers, for instance "ORBX Global openLC Europe Scenery 0701":  I'm assuming this overrides something that is in the "0701 Base" layer.  Does it matter then if it's not located above "0701 Base"?

Why would OpenLC Europe Scenery 0601 go below the default p3d 0601 folder in the library layers?
