Guest J van E
I wonder if this trick would give me even better fps with FTX! http://youtube.com/watch?v=uYbVx1Zz3Us Or should I stay away from this kind of 'hacking'? It does sound interesting, but I do wonder why these files aren't converted from DXT5 to DXT1A out of the box...!
gwolb
Yea, I just noticed that also, very interesting, but hard to say what the impact is.

Holger Sandmann
Hi guys, haven't tried it (don't really believe in free lunches ) but there's an interesting observation by Bill Leaming in the AVSIM thread: http://forums.avsim.net/dcboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=121&topic_id=439613&mesg_id=439613&page= Cheers, Holger

ZefleR
I tried this out last night and although i only did the global and AUST directories i didnt notice any major improvements. maybe 2 fps. you'll get that by just defragging your machine. I'll be copying the backup files back in.
macca22au
If you do this you are deliberately degrading the textures. Their quality is severely reduced, so if you feel you need to do this, then frankly you would be better with FS9 until you can upgrade your hardware. With the proper hardware then FSX shows off its superb visual qualities that make it a great step up from FS9. Also the video gives the impression there is no AI, which would certainly improve performance but reduces realism and pleasure dramatically. If you find it necessary to strip FSX down like this, then I feel strongly the previous version is probably better. There is nothing wrong with FSX, for most of us it is a problem of hardware.
