antonvs
During many pleasurable hours spent flying around the North Island I stumbled upon the wonderful strip at Taihape (NZVR). It has been given the typical ORBX/Ozx treatment yet I find it has not been mentioned in the KML file. This grass airstrip is about 12nm SE of Waioru (NZRU S39 41.1', E 175 47.3') and is fantastic and addictive. The airstrip is hidden over a ridge to the West of the town of Taihape and opens to view when near finals. The strip has a slope as you approach and goes up over a hump towards its NW end. Also there is a road with power poles parallel to the strip on its west side. Here are some screenies: http://flickr.com/gp/fotoprix/u82543 http://flickr.com/gp/fotoprix/579bVg http://flickr.com/gp/fotoprix/8j870W http://flickr.com/gp/fotoprix/3rtZ50 In this last shot the airstrip is on the far left. Capnsully
Hang on, I thought fsx wasn't meant to have sloped runways?
hughp
The sloping grass airfields are there in orbx, they just don't use the standard (default) flat FSX turf runway texture Go to Google Earth to see how great a job they did on this one, looks accurate, very like the real field. Capnsully
Thanks, it looks like a challenging little strip!
Sundog
There's another grass strip on the south island that is similar, except it is on a hill and the top of the hill is near the middle of the runway, so both ends slope. It's a lot of fun getting in and out of. IIRC, it's NW of Queenstown, just north of one of the lakes in a valley.
