jeansy
funny enough, it was a sight during WW2 as B17s were based at Mareeba and often flew into cairns

Jarrad Marshall
Another superb batch Emmsie, keep 'em coming! funny enough, it was a sight during WW2 as B17s were based at Mareeba and often flew into cairns Jeansy - I don't know much about the Mareeba USAAF base, apart from what I've read on a couple of websites. Am I correct in thinking that the base was at a different site to the current airport? Cheers,
jeansy
from my understanding YBCS and RAAF Base CAIRNS has been in the current location since day dot during the War there were several US Air Bases around Cairns, Cairns has even had the honours of one of the only Australian airports to operate B29s FNQ has a very rich WW2 aviation history as it was one of the largest staging areas of the early pacific campaign
