Real weather

I have FEX and tried using the FSX live weather updated every I think 15 mins, I tried it this morning because it is really foul weather at the moment at devonport, I mean real wish I were on the ground stuff. So I set it up , it downloaded the latest weather from Jeppson, great I thought here we go. To my not so surprised eyes, The jeppson forecast was calm , clear, some dewpoint info, I mean how wrong can they get it, I know weather men get a roasting when they get it wrong but this was so dam wrong I thought they must have used another planet for there forecast. It has been lousy weather here for at least 3 days, so my guess is they don't update there info too often. OR I am doing something very wrong in the setup, am I wasting my time with the fsx defaut weather, how long till FEX update or REX arrives.

cheers

The Jeppersen Database can be anything up to 24-48 Hours old and IMHO about as useful as a pack of franger's with holes,  I was under the impression that FEX can DL and interperate the Metar's anyway

Yeah,

I'd noticed the same thing...but its not consistently out of date, sometimes it's spot on, so theres some variability in there somewhere. Love to know more about how the mechanism works...

Just out of curiosity this is the METAR from Jeppesen at 14:42 EST 12/06/08

So i guess, sometimes they're ok, sometimes they get out of whack, i also wonder if the small GAAP's and regional stations are not as inherently accurate as say the bigger internationals.

It's been way longer than 15 min( thought the saying was wait half an hour), anyway it's still blowing like mad, and bucketting down total overcast  none of this broken stuff.

Strange though I forgot to mention that when I took of it was buffeting me like crazy, just no precipitation or clouds, Maybe some lost thermal from the mainland driffted over to give me a hard time. Anyway it sure would add to the sim if they could get it right, I liked that wdget thingy that looked pretty close to spot on.

cheers

For you flightsimmers who have trouble reading the METAR in martinc's mail, there is a very good decoder available as a free download (DonationWare)that will read a downloaded METAR from Pilot Briefing Services from Pilot Briefing Service. You then copy and paste into the decoder - and it will translate it into plain understandable English.

You need to register for the Pilot Briefing Services - but that is also free. The site is also full of other aviation info.

For the decoder got to SAAA - Sports Aircraft Association of Australia - Builders of Experimental Aircraft and look for Wayne Gill's WX DECODER. The current version is 2.0.1

I found it very usefull when studying for my PPL - I still had to read a METAR but it helped with the translation and improved my ability to directly read the information.

This is martinc's METAR copied from his mail.

The FSX default real world weather always give a calm and clear first reading for some reason.  And then once the game is running it seems to download or apply the actual weather.

However I use Active Sky X an add-on program and it is streets better.

If you use it with X-graphics or FEX then the clouds are brillliant.

If you have a multicore processor you can set the affinity for ASX to another core (in my case the fourth core, Core 3) so it doesn't compete with FSX which in spite of some scenery threading still dominantly uses Core 0.
