YMML Melbourne International - PREVIEW SHOTS PART 3 - Airside! :)

Recommended Posts

As promised, here's the airside of the terminal. Still a work in progress and a bit of texture work to finish on the terminal building (getting clear shots of airside buildings is very hard without security access), but we're getting close. Notice the detail on the ground from all heights. Even down low every crack and oil stain is clearly visible. From the cockpit of a B737 it's like being there :)

Brilliant stuff Koorby. Regarding airside access, maybe you should contact the airport manager and arrange to be issued a visitors pass at sometime when its not to busy for them as you will need to be escorted whilst on the movement areas. We issue them all the time at the airport where I work for many varied reasons and yours sounds like high priority to me !

Wow, truely remarkable...

One wonders just how much more realistic things can get.  This surpasses all my expectations in over 23 years of simming.  Just amazing.

Cheers and thanks John.

In FS major airports this is nothing short of a graphical arts breakthrough-- the realism factor just sky-rocketed off the charts!  When you look carefully & have problems discerning whether it's sim or the real McCoy, you gotta know FS has developed way beyond the point of being just a game...how about FSVA (Flight Sim Virtual Art...?)  ;)

Does this scenery use any kind of LOD system? I checked out the demo of KORD by FSDT and with their LOD system as soon as you get in the air all the ground objects including aircraft vanish and there is nothing left but a ground texture and terminals.  It looks awesome from the ground but absolutely vacant from the air.  From the air the KORD scenery looks exactly like the images posted here.

Yes everything is LODed but I have no intention of being that aggressive. The point of LOD is to keep what is visible drawn and remove that which is not visible so the sim is not wasting resources trying to draw tiny details from afar, thus improving performance. But you will see the basic infrastructure from afar, but you do need to be resonable.

You will find eyecandy stuff is usually first to be cut, as that also tends to be the more performance draining detail.

Nope, nothing disappears in our YMML. The shots above don't show any ground vehicles or aircraft because I simply did not have AI turned on, and we have not yet placed the static and animated ground vehicles yet. I also beg to differ on our shots versus the FSDT KORD ones, because our shots at altitude shows everything in place the same as it is from ground level.

We have LOD's on every single model and object, but that does not mean they disappear when you gain altitude - that's not LOD  :o, that's butchery :) Correctly interpreted, LOD (level of detail) means that all objects remain in place at a distance/altitude, but take on simpler model forms to save on the number of vertices being processed for distant objects.

The only way you're going to get a barren airport is by dragging your scenery and autogen sliders all the way to the left :)

EDIT: Oops, posted while Marty posted LOL! Oh well, two answers for the price of one :)

May I echo the sentiments being expressed by all so far - This is a remarkable recreation of this airport and will enhance my simming experience greatly. Well done to the Orbx team.

This will become an excellent airport for just 'plane spotting'.

A couple of questions. Will the aerobridges attach to AI aircraft ( with the appropriate 'exit' additions to the aircraft config. files) as happens with the default aerobridges? Will we be able to allocate parking codes to parking spots via an AFCAD program in the usual manner, without upsetting any of the built in features of this airport?

Notwithstanding these issues, I really am looking forward to the release of this product and am a definite purchaser with credit card at the ready.

Yes the Aerobridges animate and connect using FSX design techniques. Every single bridge will be modeled as in real life, For example Echo Concourse has 5 different designs in bridges and all are currently modeled in in position, the international terminal has unique bridges pretty much for each gate and each one is being modelled as accurately as possible.

The AFCAD will be editable so long as you restrict it to Parking codes. Any other changes will compromise alignment with the photoreal and other scenery. No one can stop you from doing your own edits but bear in mind any changes an end user makes may not be supported my the design team.

FTX Team

Would you expect much scenery mis-alignment between FTX YMML, FTX Default, FS9 Default?

Being an avid online flyer, I just hate to see other aircraft parking inside the buildings.

Unfortunately this will always be the case, the Default FSX is better than the Default FS9, but some taxiways are  incorrectly positioned in both cases. Parking spots are better around the International concourse due to its satellite parking as opposed to the right up the terminal parking at the domestic terminals.

I Will test it to see how bad but its the price for higher accuracy.
