FTX Historical Markers

Hello Freddy,

good question! The GeoData Vertical Obstructions database we used for placing antennae, smokestacks, etc. throughout Australia also included a "monument" category. Initially, we were just going to drop those coordinates. However, given that this was an aviation related database it's reasonable to assume that those locations would have some significance to pilots. Not knowing what those monuments are (the database doesn't say) we used a generic FSX monument object, which is what you're seeing in your screenshot.

If you spot one you could check the same location in Google Earth to see whether anything relevant shows up. Be aware though that the GeoData locations aren't all that accurate spatially so the real-world structure might be a few hundred meters away.

Cheers, Holger

Holger,

Thankyou for the reply.  Ahh, they were in the database used to place antennae and smokestacks etc, but the database doesn't say what they are.  Interesting.  Well, I am glad you left them in.  They provide yet another something in FTX to explore and find out about.

So it was an aviation related database and we can assume they are related to past aviation moments in history.  Roger that.  That's a good place to start.  Google and Google Earth ... here I come.

:)

The aviation context is more likely to be "things visible from the air" rather than they commemorate some avaition-related event.
